I know my 4.11 isn't gonna cut it...14 mpg and winding pretty tight at 65-70 mph. I don't want to slow My question is what would be a good rearend ratio with a stock 235 and an 86 s10 5 speed? Right now I don't even need first how low can I go?

    I'm running 3.36's in my 53 now.. Stock 235 with 88 S-10 T5.
It's really not bad, a little under geared leaving a light ONLY if there's some asshole right on your tail. Otherwise it's very drivable.
    65 mph is about 2200 in 5th, and 45 is about 2000 in 4th.
Even though it's just a small difference, i may try a set of 3.55's (i'm running a 56 chevy rear end) i have here. That little bit might help a little without bumping the cruise rpm too much higher.

My mpg isn't much better than your though.. Lack of power has my foot into the single carb most of the time so i compromise mileage..
If it had just a bit more hp it would be perfect with the 3.36's

just wondering where i could get a 86/ T5 and what they are worth and is there much to bolting it in. I've got a 55 210 blue flame twin carbs and split headers and it revs it ring of in third gear

I'd suggest you run a 3:43 or a 3:73 S-10 rear end with that tranny. I know a lot of guys who have, and they've all gotten the best of both worlds: low end torque in the primary gears, and a real high ratio in 4th & 5th gear. It's GREAT for gas mileage with SBC's & probably even better with your inline 235! My 2 cents only. Good Luck!
  7. simular setup in my 54, not T5, but a 700r4. i have a 3.73 s-10 rear, tri carbs, split manifold and hell got low-mid 20's on the freeway.

I have two five speed set ups. One has a 3.89, the other a 3.73 The 3.73 equipped car may get a 3.55 or even a 3.27 because it has a torquey motor. The 3.89 car has very tall tires and a hot flatty, its perfect.

If the engine is in even good stock form, you can run low 3 ratio, my '59 PU had a Dana44 with 3.54's, I could have easily pulled 3.08's, uphills/etc...never was underpowered...and this was just a .030 stock rebuild engine.

My only issue was i had the granny 4spd, so took off in 2nd mid 3's was about the best for me just so I didn't risk slipping the clutch.

I'd have loved to have another gear, my truck would have pulled it just fine, and if your engine is in good shape, yours will too.

Also, I ran 30.5 tall rear tires.

As a comparison for you guys, I run a 2.93 gear with a non overdrive. The stock engine was real happy, The warm modified 235 likes it too. I runa 25.2 Inch rear tire. 80 mph is 3100r's, 100 is 3900. Ive been to 4600 which is almost 120.
    The T-5 is like a .76 5th? so 3.73 X .76 = 2.83 final drive. pretty close.

Glad to help, even if it's only some different idea's..
I was told by a few guy's, Steve at Buffalo Ent. being one, to use a 3.73 gear with this set up. I do have a set of 3.70's, but they are not yet set up in the carrier so i went with that i had together..
I think no matter what you run, you will be very happy with the results once its together. Mine feel's like a whole different car.

figured i'd bump this instead of starting a new one. i'm looking at a 56 chevy rear end and it has 3:36 gears. is this too high? i figured i'd try to put it around 2 grand at 70ish mph and that would be close. opinions?
  13. 3.36 won't be too bad, note the comments in the second post in the thread.

A 235 really needs a 2-bbl carb or a 2x1 setup to improve the breathing - they get -better- milage with that change, even if you stick a 2GC on an adapter on the original stock intake. I think once you do that, the 3.36 should be fine.

Does anyone make a 1x2bbl intake for this motor? Later truck intake maybe?

I got stuck with a T4 trans, so I'm planning to go even higher - like a 3.08 - to compensate for the lack of OD. The motor could stand a carb anyways, so I'll probably change that too.

It would help if you would post your rear tire diameter.:D

Running the 3.36's in mine is really not bad at all. Sure it would be better with a lower gear, but because of the low first in the T5 it's actually much better than it was with the stock 3 speed and 3.70 gears..
If the gear set in the 56 rear end your looking at is good just run them..At the very least you will have an extra carrier when you swap to a lower gear...if you feel you even need to.
Originally I had planned to swap at some point as i have a few different carriers here ranging from 3.55 to 4.10, but as of right now i don't see a need to.
One thing i will say is mine without a doubt need's more carb.....As Rustynewyorker said, multiples or a single two barrel would make a huge improvement...

I found an 86 S10 T5 and a Camaro 3.55 rearend. Have not comitted to it but it is mine if I want it. Just want to make sure I will be happy with it behind my 216 for now. I have a 235 to go through as money allows. Maybe some of you will know.
