So I am about to acquire a very nice 47 Chevy Pickup. It has an IFS front clip, Posi rear, near perfect body with nice paint, good interior. It's just minus engine and trans. So, the possiblities are wide open. Any suggestions? I can get my hands on a 350 350 combo for free, but I'd really like to put something more unique in it. Corvette maybe? Big block? I don't know. Looking for ideas. What would you drop in her? Thanks!
before I saw all the accoutrement listed above, I would have suggested a spankin fine inline 6 cylinder - very cool. but, with an IFS, etc., it's tougher to say - 350sbc though just seems too cookie cutter - maybe a 409? Or a 500 caddy (I like that idea a lot)
I see absolutley nothing wrong with a 350 in the truck you describe, maybe an OD trans depending on the rear gear though....but free = good to me. Do you have a large budget ?? I know that I would rather have a free "cookie cutting" driver than a non-running truck sitting while I saved up the money for "Unique"
I like 427s myself. Wish I had one. I do have a 390 horse 390, that would be an awful cool combo. A Ford in a Chebby, no one ever does that. If you want different and you got to go looking anyway why not a big poncho or a late early olds like say a 394. Plenty of grunt stock out of the box, very traditional and you won't park next to yourself very often. Imagine this between your fenders: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=520860
All great ideas! Thanks guys. Not that I have a bunch of money for this build, but if I could find something other than a 350, i'd be pretty happy. It's good to have a goal in mind. Free is very good, and if I don't have $ for anything else when I'm ready, then that will do. But if I could find a reasonably priced setup or make a deal on something cool, then I'd lean toward that. Dig the Olds and Caddy ideas!
Plenty of grunt with any of the 455 engines...Buick, Olds, Poncho..and of course the big caddys. Best of all is that the 'other' gm engines are often cheaper than a bbc. And with all of the torque you don't need to go to an O/D trans to use a 2.7 rear. Just a thought. .
