What kinda vises are you guys using??

  1. I inherited one that came out of the sheet metal shop at the old Dwight Cotton Mill in Gadsden AL. Wife's grandfather worked there a long time, he got it when they were tearing the place down. That vise is close to 100 years old now.

I found my Wilton at an auction-it have welding splatter over every inch of it-but still works great. My favorite is an old York I got at another auction years ago for like $40. Its a monster and holds everything I can pick up and put in its jaws.

apparently this design by the great man himself as used in the original factory was replicated some time ago and were selling for large sums of money,
A British Record is very durable as are the old fashioned blacksmith's post vice which is the only vice that can truly grip round objects, (excluding pipe vices which are no good for hammering on anyway) A blacksmith's post vice can sometimes be found very cheaply as they are considered old fashioned, or else an expensive antique.

I googled these and found a comment that the replicas were sold for £750 each,

I bought two blacksmith vises for $25 each within a week of each other. They sell cheap.

Most would consider that a knockoff Wilton.

Well, it sure fooled my boss! :D

A ball peen hammer should't leave dents in a vise.
