OK, the frame is cut and you are going to add a piece or take out some. What is the best way to put the 2 pieces back together? Butt em up, weld then put a fishplate or overlap em or what do you say? Thanks for your input guys. Just want to do what is best.....

But weld and fish plate. Maybe even box the spliced part for a foot or two on each side of the splice.

  3. Haven't done it but from what I've seen BJR is right on with that. Butt, fishplate, box if needed (especially if lengthening).

Thanks BJR, that sounds like a good idea about boxing that area after the butt weld and fish plate.

When splicing a section in and butt welding, cut the frame and filler channel at a 45 degree angle. This will give you alot more weld suface = greater strength. Do a fish plate inside and be sure your fishplate has no corners as they would be a stress riser. A round circlular fish plate would be the ticket, and as mentioned earlier put a boxing strip over the whole shabang and it'll prolly be the strongest part of your frame.

Doing all of this is probably overkill but if your zippin down the freeway any added degree of safety is welcomed as far as I'm concerned.
