Just bought a complete pair of 40 Ford front brakes(backing plates to drums) at 'GoodGuys' Columbus and the top of one shoe is loose.. I was wondering what glue or bonding agent I could use to repair the shoe?? All 4 shoes are in great shape except for just the top of the one shoe.. Thanks for any suggestions you guys might have...

If one is already doing that what do you think is going to happen when they are put to use and heat up? I am sure in Dayton you can find a clutch and brake rebuilder take the cores there and have ceramic/kevlar linings riveted on,this material will lessen drum wear and deliver about 20% less fade and improve stopping.

  7. Bonding the friction material to the shoe body is complicated , requiring special adhesives and time in an oven ; it cannot be duplicated at home . One more voice saying - Get Another Set !

Unless you're putting them on the car for a ex-wife to drive down Pikes Peak, get new shoes.

A lot of the shoes have the holes for the rivets already drilled. I suppose you could drill the friction material through to the holes in the shoe, buy a rivet kit and repair them that way. If the glue is coming loose I would do all the shoes. But try to re-glue, no.

I didn't think my was hilarious. You can buy a brake shoe rivet kit. It would probably work.

Dang! I was just thinking of that guy in Yank Tanks mixing up asbestos and relining shoes in Cuba and wondering how he bonded them after I read the reply above saying it couldn't be done at home.

    LOL.

Hey F-6, I meant no disrespect.. How have you been?? Haven't talked to you for awhile.. I still really think something can be done to these $100 brake shoes and your idea was a good idea...

Fueler, did ya miss the first sentence? While he doesn't specfy they are used, they were likely from the swapmeet at Goodguys. At any rate as everyone else said, replace them and don't risk any livesd on something as important as brakes.

JB Weld is a known proven solution. An awful lot of guys have been brainwashed by the safety nazis

Just use them for cores. There is no way that rebonding can be done at home. Don't mess around with a safety issue like brakes

Uncle Buck , I read that BUT some how let it slip by me that Goodguys was a SWAP meet , some how it hit me that it was a hot rod supply business. That make a BIG difference.

None taken man. How ya been, other than brakes, lol. I just bought a nice set of (4) shoes from Thompsons Garage. The link shows a pic with shoes that all have the same length friction material but, when they arrived there were long and short shoes, they way they are supposed to be. Good quality stuff. $80 for a set of fronts. Here's a link:

Thats understandable. If you have never been to one of their events you would have no knowledge of what they have going on. I ASSUMED (and we all know how stupid it is to do that) that everybobdy here was familiar with Goodguys and their events around the country. The swapmeets they put on are part of the show event and vary in size.

 Damn, you need to get out more! :D Swapmeets to me are like a trip to Toys R Us for a kid.:p Out this way the junkyards are becoming all late model and old stuff is dissapearing. The farms have been picked over for years too and the high scrap prices ate up alot of stuff too

rivet them. should do the trick if you recess the rivet head as they had originally. and a couple additional ideas... maybe place that shoe so that portion is downstream on the rotation of driving forward. and maybe don’t use steel rivets.
