I see this stainless trim on the bottom edge of a lot of this style kustom: Is this something that actually came on some '30s cars, or is it made? If it is made, what would one use to make it? (Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but I know '50s cars WAY better than '30s and early '40s.)
So, all you have to do is go down to your local junk yard and get some off of one of their 39 Zephyrs or 42 Buicks....easy peasy ..
No problem! I'll just run down the street to my local junkyard and have a looksee... Thanks, everyone. If this question had occurred to me when I was at home I would have whipped out one of my books and figured it out, but as usual the HAMB is faster than I am.
Shoot! Da HAMB's fasta dan dat cat dat shut off da light in his room...an' jump in da bed befo' da room got dark...
This would work to make your own. http://www.yogisinc.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=results/category_id=3838/mode=cat/cat3838.htm Gary
The metal is thick enough that ‘blind’ holes can be carefully drilled from the backside and tapped for threaded studs.....as one method of attachment. 3M double sided adhesive tape comes in various widths and is another method..... As for the material itself, aluminum, stainless and brass are all available in various cross sections that can be shaped to follow body contours to custom make such trim parts. In the case of brass, it is usually plated.....the others, polished. Ray
That is cool stuff! I Googled a bit after my first post and learned that the trim on the lower body line of the LaJolla Chevy was made from chrome tubing.
Maybe someone can post the section on Harry Bradley`s LaJolla. It is pretty intricate with lights and white plastic(?). Real neat to see in person. I have pictures somewhere?
Bradley's are indeed intricate, solid on the outside and bottom with white plastic on top. The lights were inside the channel.
The '37 Zephyr coupe and sedan I had in the 60's and 70's both had that strip. Unfortunately, I'll bet you won't find one today!!! You will probably have to make your own or have someone make it for you. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
We used to use chrome plated brass for rub rails on runabouts.Easy to form , easy to tap. Don`t use Stainless fasteners , Galvanic corrosion.
