Technical What did you do with your car today? * NEW*

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by j hansen, May 3, 2020.

  1. Managed to get the freshly painted glove box door on without messing it up. For some reason, had to elongate the holes in the right side of the hinge to get it square in the dash. Didn't fit like it did when I snagged it out of a '41 at French Lake 20 odd years ago. Who knows.

Soaked the NOS latch gizmo in brake cleaner to get all the gummy dried up lube out of it and lubed it with a little 3 in 1 oil. Went in and worked nice.

Frankenstein'd a light on Mike's welding hood. The LEDs cast a wide light and helped some; but I wonder if a regular head lamp would focus the light on the weld better. Will be the next idea I'll try to help these old eyeballs.

Reconditioned a couple cheap swap meet intakes. I probably have more time in them then they are worth but I enjoy doing it. Didn't enjoy the pipe nipple that broke off flush, that got a little interesting. One of them is headed for my 32 Plymouth.

I fixed a tare in the other fender and keeping this truck IMG_0762.JPG IMG_0761.JPG IMG_0766.JPG IMG_0767.JPG IMG_0768.JPG being a one man operation I put together some pieces to allow one person to R & R the front sheet metal.

  8. Installed the vintage 2x4 blower adapter I got after looking for one of these for 7 years. Installed the rebuilt 600 cfm carbs with old spacers, all polished. Need to finish fabricating the fuel psi regulator bracket and linkage. WIN_20221105_16_19_02_Pro.jpg

  11. I picked up a Kilduff lightning rods shifter for the 41, I spent the weekend disassembling, cleaning, stripping black powdercoat, polishing aluminum, reassembling and adjusting.
I'm happy how it turned out and was happy to use some Rocket 10 spokes as trade fodder, since I had no use for those.

Making some decisions before I start cutting up this '26 Dodge 4dr.

    Measure, measure, measure.
Think about it for a while.

  14. I run the same shifter in the coupe. Works great, I think you will really like shifting the unit. They are very well made and very tough. Brian Kilduff told me if I break it shifting, he would give me a new one.

Not today but last week and not very exciting - I finished prepping the shifter tower and painted it gloss black. It's now ready to be assembled with the Chevelle autobox rubber gaiter. Traced an electrical problem with the horn to the steering column but could not do much about it as I do not have the correct steering puller which is now on order (Mercury Comet Caliente steering wheels are no longer 3 a dollar so I'm not going to risk it with a BFH). Once that appears I could find out what the problem is and sort out the (not) self-cancelling blinkers, and then it's done for the winter (I need to bleed old brake fluid and change diff oil but see no point in doing it now as car won't be driven until the spring).

Took the Sunliner out for the first road test after the cam change fiasco, the trans is now shifting as it should with the stock cam but will have to see what will happen since some metal has went through it but seems fine now. Will do another oil change after about 50 miles.

Moved the truck outside to rearrange some stuff today. Took the opportunity to listen to the not stock camshaft happy dance.

I just got thru putting a new set of spark plug wires, with RAJAH clips, on the 50. So I took it to run a few errands. Worked good and I had fun!

  20. Began the process of changing from cowl steering to cross steer. Removed all the old steering equipment and started to sort out all the new locations and particulars. Installing a 525 Saginaw and there is little room left for it so it will be tight and most likely require my headers to be altered. One step at a time. Picked up some cold rolled 3/4 shaft and a chunk of 1 3/4 tubing for the mast. Boy prices are really through the roof these days!

  21. Started a 2" channel on the Vicky project just because I'm not a huge highboy fan and am kinda splitting the difference. It being on a 32 pinched frame does make thing interesting, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Extra attention to the bottom inside of the "A" pillars and doors is necessary for clearance. Rear wheel openings will also need to be raised, just the price you pay for a vision IMG_0832.JPG IMG_0834.JPG IMG_0833.JPG .

  22. I spent some quality drive-time with it. Had a few errands to do, the weather was nice, I was in no hurry.... It's funny how spending an hour or so behind the wheel can turn an ordinary day into a great day!

  23. Did a little mock-up today for motivation ! Tons of hours of metal work begin next week. IMG_0875.JPG IMG_0874.JPG IMG_0873.JPG IMG_0876.JPG

  24. Last week I found some helmets for my 3x2 setup, those arrived looking like baked potatoes but looked much better on the carbs, hopefully I can make time to rebuild these carbs over the winter.
Speaking of winter, 77 inches of snow and my snowblower broke it's transmission halfway through this morning ....ugh

I have had this Accel dual point apart for some time and cleaned ready to assemble. It uses a couple ball bearings to hold the shaft stable and I polished those to a slip fit to make future servicing easier. I have no instructions on setting the advance and no success looking online for some. So I did a little measuring and ended up putting it back like it was at 13 degrees. You are offered four different settings based on where you insert the allen screw 10,13,14,17
One other concern was what lube to use on the needle thrust washers, I ended up going with my old stand by White Lithium ( what I use of lifters also )
The Accel points are easily disassembled for service so that is next on the list. The truck runs great with the reworked stock distributor with Mallory points but the Tach drive Accel will add to the cool factor with a nice Moroso cable drive tach ! IMG_0771.JPG IMG_0773.JPG IMG_0772.JPG

Finished the distributor rebuild, but the truck is running so good with the one in it and the plan is Dec. 3rd track day so I am not changing it now. The next step over the winter is a cage! Or I have been thinking about selling it. IMG_0774.JPG IMG_0775.JPG IMG_0777.JPG
