I learned to drive on a 1949 Ford bread truck in 1957. My father was a truck driver and the Teamsters union was on strike. While on strike, my dad used to pick rags, metal, and paper from the local dump to sell to the scrap yards. I was 9 years old. We had a 1 1/2" knotted rope tied to the rear bar. He taught me to drive so that if he was down in the pit (in the dump) and the side caved in on him,I could drive the truck off and pull him out. If that failed, at least I could drive out and get help. Shit! I sound like poor white trash??

  7. In 1964, '53 Chevy, 4 door, 6 cylinder, 3 speed, I was 14, got caught by a neighbor, but she never told my folks. I finally told them about 15 years later.

The old man's 1968 AMX, 390 4 speed with a 4.44 rear gear. Candy apple red with white stripes over the top. God, I loved that car. I have no idea what he was thinking, letting a shithead like me drive his car. And yes, I raced it at the slightest provocation and yes I totaled it after shutting up a shit talker. I told my Dad that I actually crashed it racing 25 years later and I thought he was gonna knock me on my ass again. He loved that car, too.

Grandpa ran a cab company, SO, I learned to drive on a 1962 CHECKER taxi with a 3 speed floor shift. Flathead 6 continental engine, putting a neck snaping 85 horses to the ground...in a 2 ton car.

I started steering my dads 1970 pop top ford camper van while he drove when I was 6. I drove my fist time around 10 ish in his 1949 Willis Jeep pickup... its the only thing I could reach the pedals on. Had the original flat head 4 cyl, three speed trans on the floor and two stick transfer case. First time was on the way back from the dump w/ a trailer. I killed it several times too.

    Good times

This makes me feel very emasculated.

I started on a 2004 "Toyota Prius". Gonna wait for the battery to die and put a BBC in it..

I learned to drive in a 1967 Fairlane GTA, learned to drive a stick in a 1964 Dodge D100 with 3 on the tree, with a very sensitive hydraulic clutch, which was very interesting on the hills in San Pedro, CA

If you don't count a CJ-5 Jeep I hit the garage with when I was 12... then it was the '50 plymouth in the attached pic. But, I took my driver's test in my mother's '87 Monte Carlo SS. I miss the Monte.. but still have the Plymouth.

I learned to drive "on the farm" which gave me plenty of room for error, the first rememberance was driving the 49 Chevrolet pickup (three on the tree) in about 1954 or so, mom was riding shotgun and dad was standing on the running board (no idea why) and I took out part of row of corn making a turn. A few years later I rolled the 1955 (early style that looked like a 54 Chevrolet), I am surprised dad didn't kill me but I guess he needed me to milk the cows. When I got lucky I got to take the family 58 Dodge, pushbutton v8, it would cruise at 80 on a gravel road, just like a boat on a rough lake. The picture is the car that my wife learned to drive in, her dad and grandpa cut up a wrecked 50 Ford to make what was called a doodlebug. It still sits in a barn on the farm pretty much as you see it there. I've cannabalized parts of the body from this car for Teri's 49 (my avatar). Guess you now know why she likes old shoeboxes. Teri's dad's first love was farming but he is a hotrodder -- back in the middle 50's he put a blower on his 53 Ford flattie, then when he bought a new 57 Ford Hardtop (Black) with a 312 and overdrive he moved the blower over to the Yblock. He still kicks himself for selling that car.

  25. It was a process. I learned how to survive in traffic on a variety of scooters...Simplex...Sears Allstate Standard..Cushman Eagle....from the age of 12 to 15...unlicensed...it was the 50s in Mississippi. I drove farm machines on my grandpa's cotton/peanut farm...then I learned to drive my Mom's 1954 Buick Special w/Dynaflow. I was given that car when I got my licence two days after turning 15.
