When I was a little boy I was playing in the old mans 65 impala, shifting the gears. I didn't realize it had to be in Park to stay still and it rolled into the alley. I went inside and didn't say anything. I pretended to be innocent and the old man pretended to believe me.

When it was time to drive he hired some small company. The owner had a small fleet of 69 camaros painted Hulk Green. It must have been a copo. They were several years old by then and I learned to drive in one of those.
I was rear ended when I stopped for a pedestrian and the car pissed off. We gave a witness a ride downtown and she threw up in the back seat.
Several years later I went to a friends girlfriends parents house and the neighbor was that guy and he had a yard full of green camaros. As each of his kids turned 16 they were given one. Some were souped up, some were beaters.

Massey Fergesen tractor then 40 Ford farm truck with dump bed, then a 38 Ford Coupe with the body cut mostly off, that was at age 9. After that I drove full time about every and anything my Dad had on his car lot. Had my first 33 Chevy at 13. Here I am at 15 thinking I am James Dean.

A 1954 Buick Special V8 with 3 speed transmission. That's right, Buick did come with a 3 speed standard transmission. In fact, I took and passed my driving test in that Buick in 1963.

'53 Ford (first car when I was 13). Automatic tranny. First manual tranny, '41 Chevy, 3 on the tree w/ vacuum assited shifting! Fell in love w/ manual shifting at that point! Didn't have or buy an auto tranny until '88!

    Cool thread!

My dad was in the Army and we were stationed in Asmara, Eritrea (east Africa). The first time I got to try to drive was there. The car? A 1939 Fiat that had been a taxi before my Dad bought it. I think I was in the 4th grade. I sat on Dad's lap trying to reach the gear shift on the floor, the pedals way down on the floor, all while steering with the biggest steering wheel I can ever remember.

I really learned to drive on a 1940 Plymouth four door. I thought that was one cool car. It had a bad rod knock, but my dad kept on driving it. It was my job to check the oil and fill it up everyday when he came home from work. He drove 30+ miles everyday, much of it on dirt roads to where he worked out on the back part of Fort Bragg. I remember putting up to 3 quarts of oil in that thing. Dad wouldn't "waste" the money on new oil, he bought Sears reconstituted oil in glass bottles. This was about 1962. One day he took me with him out on some dirt road on Fort Bragg and told me to get in the driver's seat. I felt like I was on top of the world as I drove that thing up and down those back roads. I was 14 it was about 1962. I just about cried when he got rid of that old Plymouth. I begged him to put another engine in it, but he got rid of it and got a '58 Dodge Station Wagon. My Mom had a '61 Pontiac Catalina with three on the tree at time. I never got to drive either of those cars. Later we got a new '64 Falcon. I got to drive that when I got my license. I still wish I had that Plymouth. Actually I wouldn't mind having that old Fiat as well.

I learned to drive on my Dad's BRG '76 Triumph TR6. he later had a blue one as well. He and his buddy( who originally bought the blue one my dad later owned) bought two of the last three shipped over. A woman bought the third. It was yellow. I have really good memories of that car.

    Late 60's Simca 1000.

Then the truck I learnt to drive in was a RG-13 Hi-Line Commer (the last one sold in New Zealand before they were rebadged as a Dodge) repowered with a Cat 3208 and a 10 speed Road Ranger.

  28. OK this is really winnie compared to some of you, but here goes. 1967 Volkswagon beetle, my dad and I would drive to the Starlite parking lot in K.C. (we lived in K.C. at the time) on Sunday mornings. He would put me threw the Parnelli Jones mini school for about an hour or so. I guess the real reason I admit to this is I remember some really good times with dad there, when I was'nt scarring the sh*t out of him.
