What bout vintage Out Boards ?

Discussion in 'The Antiquated' started by mitch 36, May 24, 2018.

  1. Over the years I must have hoarded at least 20 OLD out board motors. Some of them were pretty rare, alas when we moved I ended up letting all but one go. I saved the 57 Evinrude 7 1/2 horse Fleetwin my Grandpa won at the Illinois State fair in 57 (he used to let me drive the boat when i was young and it was my job to winterize and wax it every fall) and just picked up a 58 Johnson 3hp seahorses at a garage sale for 20 bucks. So it starts again!! What do you guys have? Anything? Mitch. 20180524_163343.jpg 20180524_163328.jpg

I am buying tune-up parts for my Homelite 55 today. It's a 4 stroke based on a Crosley engine. Made from 1961 to 1972.

    These are cool.
I have three (what I would call vintage out boards) but too new for here so I won't post pics.
They are one late 60s Johnson 2.5hp, one early 70s Johnson 3hp and a early 70s Evinrude 6hp.
They were all my grandfathers and were used as kickers on his boats. I grew up using them with him fishing on the east coast of Vancouver Island.
He always kept them in top running order but they were getting pretty tired when he passed away. My uncles were going to huck them out. I saved them and I plan on restoring them one day. Just tucked away in the shed for now.

Fisher Pierce, BearCat, Homelite, all are 4 stroke engines.
Had over 60 of them over the years, all that's left now are a couple NOS rubber water pump impeller's and a few props...........................................

The older 4 strokes are great little motors for fishing, trolling (no need for a kicker), etc. not much power but fun if propped rite......................................
Look up Moriarity here on the HAMB he has a decked out Crosley in a Trike....

  14. George Riley's 75 hp, 1954-6. When Merc's biggest engine was a 40 and Evinrude's was 35, this was huge in many ways. Rile was of course famous for his overhead conversions for 4 bangers and a few V8 castings. He also built his own inboard/outboard drive which was very fast for the 1930s powered by a flathead V8. His design was infringed on by Volvo, Riley didn't have the funds to go after them.

My friend has 2 of these outboards and a NOS powerhead. 5 cylinder, 4 stroke.

A good friend (Tom Pesula) gave me a 1917 ? Evinrude. It's missing quite a few parts but that's not a problem. I am going to make it into a floor lamp for my man cave. I've built a flywheel and a gas tank out of MDF. When it's all done, it will make for a really cool addition to my haven. I'll post some photos the next time I work on it.
