Sitting here wasting time on the interweb and listening to old rock and roll and 'Hot Rod Lincoln' plays. In the song is the line 'it's got safety tubes and I ain't scared'.

I have no idea what 'safety tubes' are (or were).

  3. I think they were an early version of a self-sealing tire, but in this case, the tube itself.

Remember, music is art, so it doesn't have to reflect reality very accurately.

That's one song that conjures up images in my mind, more like a mini video and always has.

It was a smaller tube within the tire, akin to what NASCAR uses on high speed tracks.

We were at a car show way back in the early 90s and the Hot Rod Lincoln the song was written (documented) about was on display.
The car was a 28 -30 Model A Ford coupe with a Lincoln flathead V8. The safety tubes refereed to the tubes or tube liners in the tires, because there was no roll bar in the car. My buddy that was with us had a 30 model A coupe and the first thing he did was grab the steering wheel and move it back and forth. There was a lot of play in the steering. It gave a whole new meaning to the part of the song that told about "took a corner and side swiped a post" and "my fenders were clicking on the guard rail posts." At speed, the car would have been wondering all over the road. as I remember, the car was pretty rough then. Gene

Before 1949 they did. From 1949 to 1951, Lincoln used a flathead V8 of 337 cubic inches it shared with the large Ford trucks.

I'm not sure it this was a joke or not but:
"That Model A vitamix it look like a pup" = "That Model A body makes it look like a pup"
Vitamix sounds like something from Australia.

One more nerd note is that the song "Hot Rod Race" had a Ford and a Mercury and the original "Hot Rod Lincoln" started off with the line "Now you've heard the story of the Hot Rod Race where the Ford and the Mercury were setting the pace..."

I think you guys are confusing Charlie Ryan's hot rod Lincoln and Commander Cody's hot rod Lincoln

    Correct.
    Charlie Ryan version:
"it's got 12 cylinders and uses them all"

    Commander Cody version:
"it's got 8 cylinders and uses them all"

    It had a Lincoln V12 not a V8.

  30. Check YouTube for the song Hot Rod Race by Arkey Shiby(sp?). There are actually four different songs that go with the original song.
“We were Ford men and likely knew that we would race until something blew.......”
