Im going to fix the brakes and put some new tread and a new exhaust system on it and drive it right now. This car is 100% complete even has the original owners manual, pontiac road map from the dealership, 1000mile and 2000mile service coupons, and alot of paper work that came with the car new. It does need new floor pans and a trunk pan. I am having trouble finding a new set of drivers door hinges. I found new pins and bushings but I think the pins have worn into the hing bore.

  10. Some one on here could tell you if this is correct...look into chevy hinges. Maybe? easier to find but I'm thinking they may work. worth asking.

Here it is the Optima 6v battery came today! And here is the Chieftain running for the first time since January. I have replaced the leaf spring bushings and shackles and replaced the king pins. I just need to install the master cylinder, brake lines and wheel cylinders so I can drive it. When I removed the brake drums it had new riveted brake shoes on it so I'm going to use them. It sound pretty good but the carburetor needs to be rebuilt. Here is the video

Man, that thing is cool! I specially dig the clock on the dash and the chrome accent around the gas filler door. Will make a badass driver!

Sounds great! Didn't know they still had "king pins" in '51?

Please excuse me if I am out of line. I know little about American iron having been a VW Geek since school. But... I love them and really enjoy reading about all the great saves you guys make with these classic cars.

On the older VWs the door hinge wear was always a problem. After 40 plus years they begin to sag( like a lot of other things!) Anyway In the VW after market they sell oversize door hinge pins and you use a ream to over bore the hinge holes then drive in the new over size pins. Do they offer such for older US cars? Might be an option if you can not locate good donor hinges off of a wreck or such.

    Love your new prize!

  21. It's a driver! A good scrubbin, and some new rubber and instant hot rod!

  22. Love how that flattie sounds! Sounds like my '51 Hudson. I thinks some steel wheels and caps and it's ready for some driving.

Thanks it still has the factory steel wheels and hub caps. I'm going to run the bullet hole rims for temporary because I still have to sand blast the factory wheels and find radials that are close in height to the bias plys. Here is a picture from a earlier post from when I went to look at it.
