Event Coverage Welcome to the 2018 Meltdown Drags

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Okiedoker, Oct 12, 2017.

  1. I just got home. What an awesome weekend. Even with the crappy weather.

Man the track people and all of the Meltdown Crew have got to be exhausted. Those guys were hustling all weekend.

I'm happy with the way the Goldchainer ran but still have a lot of sorting out left to do. It went a 6.92 @101 with a 1.41 60'. Not bad for a car that is street driven ALOT!

I was also helping out my friends with the their cars, the Panty Doppper and the Seam Ripper, so I stayed pretty busy.

I didn't get to watch as much racing as I would have liked, but what I did see was killer! The only regret was not getting to meet some of the folks I was looking forward to meeting.

Such a GREAT weekend. Once again, Hats Off to the Meltdown Crew and the track personnel. They all worked especially hard to make this Meltdown one of the best. With the poor weather conditions, their job was doubly tough.

Like last year the drag cars could show up on Thursday to get their pit spots, and go through tech. Once again, this went very well. This really eliminated the traffic jambs that used to happen when all of the racers entered, pitted, went through tech, and raced on the same day.

The rain on Friday sucked, but things dried off by late Friday afternoon. Although light rain came and went Friday evening / night, there was still good racing action.

Saturday was EXCELLENT. Lots of racing all day, and up to almost 11 pm. My ears are still ringing from Saturday night. WOW!!! The parade of gassers was very cool. It's really interesting to learn the history of some of the cars. After all, history is a big part of what The Meltdown is all about. One of my favorites was the Colson and Woods Studebaker coupe. It was recently found, and will be undergoing a full restoration to it's 1962 version. After it's restored, the current owner is planning to drag race the car at vintage events. Although, it's currently in a non-running state, Ron Colson, (who later drove "The Chi Town Hustler" funny car), rode in the car for the first time since 1962 as it was towed down the 1/4 mile.

Personally, Sunday was the best for me. Being a local guy, Sunday is the day to make ALOT of runs.....Plus, the track was back to running the 1/4 mile. Due to the rain, both Friday and Saturday was limited to 1/8th mile drags.

It was a great day at the Meltdown Drags! So much eye candy, the smell of race gas, burning rubber, and nostalgic drag cars everywhere.
I will definitely be going back next year.

    What’s the date for 2019?

Missed this year, but it won’t happen again, god willing.

Probably my five year daughter’s favorite, uh, Purple...

Obviously my five year old son’s favorite car from the pics I brought home, duh, super hero... Although I showed him my video of the Street Fuel Coupe. He asked “is he gonna do a burn out”? Then I felt his little brain explode. Just wait till he sees it in real life.

Yeah the track crew was on it! I was admiring the Goldchainer when a big track employee in the cool period duds and a cane said you can’t park that thing there.
Man the car is beautiful and runs hard.
I hope you will be back with it next year for sure.
Actually I would love to run against you when I ever get my 32 PU finished. I believe they would be awesome lined up side by side. So really I might need you to keep coming back for a few years, maybe four Would you mind starting the smack talk to get me motivated?

  15. Haha, I was pitted in the back 40 so I was parking up by the other 2 cars I was helping on. I only got scolded once the entire weekend. That's pretty good for me.

I'm not much of smack talker, so I'm not sure I'll be much help in the motivation department. LOL

“Hey Wyatt, do you need the Goldchainer to tow that slow Windsor motor down the track to know what fast really feels like”?

Rolled back into the drive at 9am Monday morning.
Uneventful trip home ( a good thing) with the exception of what I can only describe as a bad load of diesel in minnesota.

It was a great weekend folks !! I had a blast.

Thank you to the MDA for putting on yet another well planned and professional event
Thank you to the Byron crew for making it happen between rain squals

Can't wait for Meltdown 10... 362 days and counting ??

Just to parrot a few earlier comments. Thank you to all the Meltdown Crew for putting on another amazing event. It was wet and wild but nothing can douse the torch you guys carry for traditional drag racing. The dedication and love for the event always shines through. And...How about those Byron Officials and Track Team that continually produced a safe and quality race surface. Excellent job to all involved. Can not wait for next year!

Sam and I made the trip again. Arrived Friday evening and set up camp. Met some great neighbors in the campground! Had a blast watching the drags and meeting new people and catching up with old friends. My buddy Shawn from St. Louis joined us on Saturday. The highlight for me was spending time with my son, seeing him sit in 2 Willys coupes, and when he met Ed Iskenderian. Thanks to the guys and gals that make it all happen.
