    Hello,
We all like a nice front end that says grrrr... A Tahitian Red, 1953 Buick Skylark parked during the lunch hour, bright sun, enjoying the hot So Cal Summer. ( Location: Newport Beach, on Via Lido heading into the Lido Isle community island.)

The Buick Skylark was in front of the 80 year old Lido Theater, still going strong in this community.

Woody's diner is just next door to this famous, old movie theater.

"The Lido Theatre was opened in 1938, and the first film it played was Bette Davis in “Jezebel”. The reason for that was that Davis lived nearby in Corona Del Mar and traveled by the site daily. Upon stopping onsite, she told the owner... “they had better open with my picture.” And they did. Davis also is responsible for the sitting parlor in the ladies room that harkens back to a time when women sat and smoked and chatted while arranging makeup in the mirrors. The parlor stools are period pieces and add such a wonderful touch."

    For Surfers:
"The Lido Theatre is only a block from the ocean, and surfers of all ages live in Newport Beach, so the Lido Theatre is also the surf film capital of Southern California, and runs a schedule of classic and new surf films. Many surf films, such as “Riding Giants” & “Step into Liquid”, have had their world premiere there, with a parade of Woodies bringing the stars to the front, where during surf premieres, they walk a blue carpet to the theatre’s doors."

    Hello,

While the custom car builders were slaving away at creating one of kind grilles for the various hot rods and customs, there were already mass produced forms all ready for simple bolt on customizing. It was as easy as sending in a check or money order and within a week or so, the product was delivered to your door.

As we all know, this was the early version of the multi-million dollar mail order (now called online ordering) business. The little hot rod guy could make his car look similar to the high dollar customizers and builders with a check, a postal money order, and the U.S. Mail. It seemed like the 57 Chevy coupes and sedans (owners) liked this style of grille more than any other model of car on the street and shows.

Our black 58 Impala almost had this look as the bolt-on grille would be simple replacement and the chromed reversed rims were a commonplace. But, we opted for Buick Skylark Wire Wheels as the only exterior custom modification to the 58 Impala.

J.C. Whitney was one of the largest mail order catalog companies from way back in those good old days.
“100 Years of JC Whitney: We miss the old-school catalogs! Before the Internet, you'd find the JC Whitney catalog in every car guy's garage.”
