Ive decided to go that way. I'll appreciate pics from cars painted with flat black single stage paint. No bases or flatenned clears.., just plain flat paint.

    Also:
Any advice on how to maintain the paint ? Im now concerned about scuffs, finger marks, etc.
We'll be using PPG Deltron D839 primer and a PPG single stage urethane flat black. 3 coats of each.

    Thanks for any help

Thats a wierd question. It will still have a varied amount of flattening agent added to the paint so the look would be different in every application.....every vehicle..... and it would have a different gloss with each spray technique.

It would be close to impossible to tell the difference unless the owner told you one was cleared and the other was not.

I can already smell my popcorn getting ready for the incoming responses. :DI do have to ask you though, what made you choose flat paint over a base coat with a flat clear?

Here is a picture of my 54 in Flat Black single stage, and as it is now in Single stage Flat gray. In both cases the paint came from Hot Rod Flatz.

The more I look at the first picture, the more I wish I'd stuck with black....

don't get me wrong i love the look of flat paint or satin but when you can get a can of the real stuff that'll last the life of your car instead of a bunch of rattle cans that'll last one year two if you're lucky to me is just lazy.

You can buy flat black in quantities large enough to spray with your Binks.

OK...how many of you guys are willing to give Ryan shit cause his coupe is flat black? Is his car a rat rod? GET A CLUE!!!!!!!!

Flat black may have been over done the past couple of years, but it is still timeless. It is cool in the past, it is cool today and it will be cool tomorrow!

The RPU on the right is single stage flat black. It's held up very well over the last 5 years. You can get it from your local paint suplier. Just ask for helicopter or bus hood paint mix.

    Amen!!!
I'm getting tired of people getting reamed for making a desicion to do something to "their" car. They man simply asked to see pics of flat black cars. He didn't ask for anyone's opinion on what they would do.
The "traditionalist" say that flat black was not traditional.. WTF? How traditional should you get?... how about a hourse and buggy? Were does it begin? I could go on, but I'll stop here for now. (lowers voice, sits down and takes a deap breath)

This forums view of popularity of any colored car should depend on tradition.
Not what was used in the 90's,80's or 70's.
I agree with Clark. Flats and metalflakes are timeless.

Thes are both catalyzed single stage urethane with PPG DX685 flattener added. The pickup is mixed to a "semi gloss", but the finish tended to be shinier where the paint was overlapped more, like in corners. The coupe was "full flat" and still looks great after about 6 years.

There is nothing wrong with using flat paint on your hot rod... Poor mercjoe just asked for pics, not a bashing about what is traditional... also you can flatten your clear coat and spray it over the primer to protect it from the UV and elements that cause it to fade... doesn't need to come from a rattle can...

Nothing better than someone getting on the soapbox and talk shit, and not even know what hes talking about!

Single stage = rattle can. I guess then 18 gauge sheetmetal = bondo?? :)

This is Rustoleum. Some folks say you cant use it...whatever. It hasnt ever done me wrong. Really anything without clear will stain and chalk unless you maintain it.

Here's my Caddy as I ran it last year, it's stripped down now for a nice shiny coat of HOK Burple. It was painted in Tractor Supply's 'low gloss' black enamel. The stuff is cheap, durable, and goes a long way.
