Look, we were pretty upset at alot of things having to do with new format and I'm still of the opinion that the venue for the car show could easily be changed but will not due to people wanting to make some dough. But for god sakes, let the $20 car show entrants get in early as well. I see no point in making them get in line Saturday other than forcing them to buy tickets they won't use. Something tells me the Anti-VLV is coming:) Can you say Palms??

Someone fill me in. Is the Gold Coast really doing this, or are the changes (not charges) an attempt to contol the idiots?

I've enjoyed what Axle and his boys have put together. You all should make it a point to go.. you'll like it. Charge or no charge, I'd bet the boys and I are still going to go...

    do your thing man...
    i feel your pains....
anyone who's never organized, held, promoted, or pulled off an event with an all volunteer organization FOR THE BENEFIT OF UNGRATEFUL WHINERS, please step up and have a go at it.
we put on 6 nostalgia races a year at palmdale and we have to come out of pocket every race to make it happen for next season and NOBODY sees one bit of the hours and hours of behind the scenes stuff it takes to put these deals together, but they complain nonetheless....

thanks to alex/shifters for the freebies so far, and thanks to all the jerkoffs who have put an end to it...

Just my 2 cents...I really can't wrap my brain around why people are complaining about this. You drive or fly to Vegas, you stay in a hotel, you gamble in the casinos and it all costs money. Then people go ape shit about a registration fee at a car show? That's peanuts compared to what you're paying for the rest of the trip. There's no way these guys are getting rich off of this show, and frankly, if you can afford the fee then who cares what they do with the money as long as they provide all the security, toilets and trophies that they promised!

If you really believe it is just too horribly obscene to pay to be in the show, then just stay home. By throwing a fit you are showing everyone that you really enjoy the event and want to be there. So if you do get so much out of the event, don't you think it's fair to give something back?

If you still can't possibly loosen your grip on that $20 but you just have to have your VLV fix, send me a self-addressed stamped envelope and I'll send you 20 bucks to get your cheap ass into the show. My address is below...

"Fine, charge the money, just let the car show guys who either don't have the money to pay or don't wanna' go upstairs get into the car show early too. Is it really that big of a deal?????? If it is, then I say BULLSHIT, it IS all about making money!"

If you dont have 20 bucks to get in, stay home. Your just trouble for the show anyway.

Axle, I wouldnt put up with all of that shit unless I was making bank.

You people bitchin should consider the entry fee a token of appreciation or donation to the boys for putting up with all of this shit and organizing the event for you to enjoy. The $20 should be a minimum donation.

Can you say they already raised their rates for this year...

If you don't like the way it is being run stay the fuck home. That goes for anyone who doesn't get why this is being done. If you don't like the music stay home. If you think that you don't want to get VLV tickets because it's to scenester for you then you are the "I'm to cool for school" scenester....

I'll be there and I'm bringing my Buick this year. Thanks to Axle I won't have to worry about wanna-be-rockasilly-tough-guys in the lot all night fucking up peoples shit... :D:D:D

I've never been to VLV but now I can't wait for next year because it'll only be us rich folks walkin' 'round with our big twenty dollar bills that can get into the car show!;)

I understand now but i always thought that some car shows should be able to attract enough advertisers/vendors to be able to pay for the event.

For example, Boat shows in south florida i believe are free and the people that go to them have wads of cash.

but i admit, i don't want a show that is ONLY advertisers. i guess if we want to see home built cool shit then we all have to pay.

but it would be cool to have a mixture of advertisers to pay for the costs, and regular people that bring their cars.

is that kind of what the goodguys show is? what is their charge?

Ive never been to VLV but I cant believe all the crying over a lousy 20/25 buck's.Where else can you go and have that much fun for that kinda money. That go's for any good car show. What's even more ridicules is the complaint {it's all about the money}well what the fuck is wrong with makeing a profit. This is a free market country we live in . If you think the show's worth the money go and have a good time,if you dont then stay home and shut the fuck up. JMO GREGG

All I can say is...If $20-30 extra bucks for a car show is a big deal for you, you might want to get another hobby. Or just stick to model car building. Seriously, wtf. It amazes me how ignorant people can be.

No worries, Axle. I have a feeling that the only people the new charge will drive away are people that you wouldn't want there anyway. Keep up the good work.

It's not the 20 dollars per person that concerns people,

It's the "are some shows getting paid alot from vendors/advertisers plus still charging for everyone that walks through door" that people wonder about.

But not this show, this show is definitely not billet days gone wild.

I just think the GoodGuys show that attracts alot of vendors should be free, is it?

You got that right. After hearing some of the stories about the last VLV I was questioning whether I wanted to go in the future if it was going to be overrun with knuckle heads. Now I'm excited to go because it sounds like this fee will be a nice cut off point to keep out those unsavory types!

We can all sit back smoking some of those 7-11 cigars and talk about how great life is when you're rich and you can spend 20 bucks on a car show and run the air conditioner during the summer and have indoor plumbing.

Even if they do make a profit who cares as long as you can afford it and you had a good time! Don't have the 20 bones? Stay home and watch American Hotrod!

    Axel,

The crybabies will cry no matter what. I've gotten over it. My pat response now is YOU DON'T LIKE IT? DON'T GO. It's pretty simple. Anyone with half a brain will understand the time and money that goes into putting on a big event. Fuck the rest of them! I know neither of us have time for their bullshit.

I totally understand the fear of not wanting this event to turn into some Goodguys-like production. That would suck and I'd consider it a step back for what the show stands for. But at some point, you're going to have to look at VLV realistically. Consider who puts this show together. Take the're track record and reputation into consideration. I dont' see this show going sour. If anything, this may allow further expansion of the show's capabilities and a better time for all in the long run. It's not like it's a one-off show where these guys are taking the money and runnin. Something is only worth what you're willing to pay. Is it worth it to you? If not, cool, stay home.

  19. Axle, Dale Seaholm here. As you may know I am the event promoter for the HOTROD-A-RAMA here in Tacoma, Wa. I agree with your stand on this.Kudos to you and the rest of the Shifters. These things cost money to put on. It's really easy for people to show up at these deals and expect it to be the ultimate party experience for them.It cost a lot of money to put these deals on. I know. I have been doing it for 4 years. We have been extremely lucky at our show. The 4th one is coming up soon. Because of the stand you are taking we are making up a few simply rules to follow at our show. You have to charge to make it work. You need sponsors also. We have been lucky to have some great sponsors. You need paid city police officers to control the unruly. No renta-cops. I was not at Viva this last year but heard from one of my fellow Mischief Maker club members what it was like. I was there the year before so I know what it's like. I really enjoyed your show and will come back again. Also, there is absolutely nothing wrong with stickin' a couple of bucks in your pocket for all the hard work you do. If you count all the countless hours it takes to put one of these things together you probably make about 2 buck an hour if that. You deserve it. Screw charity. I work hard on promoting my show all year long it seems. I can just imagine what you have to do for your show with the size it is. If some folks complain about 20 bucks to enter the show they should just stay home and go see the latest block buster movie and get some popcorn and a large soda. It's a little more expensive but with less driving involved. Keep doing what your doing and I'll do the same. Oh, and by the way, our show is pretty damn fun if ya wanna come. I feel your pain brother. Dale

Alls I know is I am paying $20 with a smile... and the $5 walkin fee is going to keep out the idiots that don't really want to be there. AXLE, pay yourself and the rest goes to orginizing next year and maybe a party for the crew that put it on.... whatever. I just paid $20 for the Hootenanny and it was just 1 day. WTF is the big deal... its not 1970 anymore... things cost $$ and that is the way it goes.

We went to Viva this year for the first time.Had an absolutely wonderful time, met alot of nice people and plan to return next year. When we read what had happened Saturday night,it really pissed me off.
Correct me if I am wrong, haven't hot rodders been trying to present themselves in a better light to the public for about 50 years now?
I say this hoping to hell it wasn't hot rodders causing the problems, but to all others it would appear that we were to blame.Quite a shame that some adults have the inability to control themselves in public while drinking.
Axle, charge a gate fee,and restrict the amount of alcohol that can be brought in,or dare I say make it an alcohol free event.Maybe I am one of the few that does not require being drunk to have a good time.Without the alcohol, there would have been no bottles thrown onto the street. The attendance would suffer, but it may add to the longevity of the show.

A bit long winded, and an abbreviated version of my ideas.I have helped to host a car show that draws over 800 cars a year for a few years, and it is a non alcoholic event.

Thanks for listening, and keep up the good work!

  22. Axle,

go for it....$20 is very little for what you & the guys put on.

Axle, yer right , pay up ! And if they bitch about it ,feed those whinners to "fat bastard" .Nobody knows how tough it is to put on a show of any size until they try and do it .I know and the fees your setting are not a make or break deal .And if the people say that 20-50 buxs will make them stay home ,oooh well .All the years you have held VLV i have heard many things , NOT once did i hear i had a real crappy time and i wont go again .On the contrary people plan and add pals just to go .KEEP ON KEEPIN ON axle , shifters .your show speaks for itself

Viva is turning into Goodguys? WTF are some of you guys smoking? Stop and listen to what you are saying.

I think this whole deal sucks. The changes suck. Know why they suck? Because I remember going to Viva and being in awe. The whole experience changed my life. People hanging out, having fun out in the parking lot, causing a little mischief, but it was all harmless and in good fun. There were even areas of the parking lot that were completely bare! And yet I had never seen so many traditional cars in one place before.

Growing pains suck. Viva was completely sold out last year. That's somewhere around 4000 people I think for the weekender. How many more came just for the car show? It was insane this year. These changes will take some getting used to. But it will work out in the end and hopefully be better for everyone involved. Lots of people said the Pileup was going to suck when it moved from the body shop. Hey, I'll be the first to agree I was bummed too. The first 2 had a certain vibe that you can't recapture when you add 300 more cars. But it worked out. Have some faith. Bitching does no good until you've drunk your last beer, cashed in your last chip if you are so blessed, and saying adios to the the Gold Coast until next year.

Axle, Im sure the only thing you have to do with them charging money was pleeding with them to keep this car show as part of the "weekender" And Im sure you put the cards in their hands and had to take it or leave it. I also don't believe that the wristband deal is another way for Tom Ingram to make an extra buck, im sure its his way he can continue makeing his 60k++ bucks for years to come.
Vegas Casinos do not fuck with punks in or on their property. They have alot of money at stake. A casinos take is off Gambling......Not Hotels/resturaunts/shows or rockabilly events.(those just help draw people into the casino nothing else) And anyone who has been attending viva has had to notice the crowd has been changing. Two years ago, about 15 mongols were cruising around the casino on saturday night. And last year at the car show no motorcycles...wonder why that was?
I will be at Viva next year to see all my friends that I have meet at this great event, with my car and my wristband. Axle thanks alot for saving this part of the Viva Tradition........

AMEN - The way I see it your time is valuable, think about it, how much do you make an hour at work? If you weren't doing this you could be working overtime or doing sidework etc. for good money. I know this is a capitalist idea and differs from some on here, but WTF. It is NO CRIME to be reimbursed for your knowledge, look at attourneys, accountants etc. reimbursed for there knowledge.
    PLUS
I can't imagine the time it takes to organize this plus all the hard costs (security, rentals, toilets, etc).
I have never been west of texas and probably won't ever make it but sounds like it is a good thing.
