I ran down to the fairgrounds at noon Friday and walked around and took a batch of photos.
Here are some of the Hamb Friendly ones and I'll post a link to the album at the end with the rest. This is what was on the grounds between 12 and 1 Friday and I probably missed a bunch of them.

A pot load of 55's on the grounds.

Probably the hardest partying fire truck in existence. Survivor of many Saturday nights at Vintiques NW nats.

For you young rodders who think you are cutting a fat hog with "Patina" and think it's the latest thing, this is the Granddaddy of all patina rigs in the PNW. Hasn't changed so much as the air in the tires for the past 25 years.

Love the pictures and the comments. Do people camp out on the grounds or do many just town the campers as a place to chill during the day?

Stude camper trailer thingy was cool too.

  13. Thanks for the pics. Looks like a great location. Gotta make this show in the near future.
Also curious about the camping venue..

Thanks for sharing, my club goes over every yr but I have never attended (kinda hot). This might be the first time I have seen pics from this show. Looks like lots of camping trailers.

  15. Thanks Mr48 - I missed a few of those. My well behaved boys were threatening to be not do well behaved so after about 2 hours we had to take off. Wish I would've seen that 38 p/u , not nessacerily for the patina but just to compare with my 39..

That wasn't the worse "crappy car" of the bunch on Friday though. I won't show the whole car but this photo shows the general level of construction:
Didn't get run out for the rug rat badmouthing a rat rod me thinks but people don't like even the junkiest of rigs being touched or climbed on. My kids learned that from day one.

The fairgrounds is huge and folks have camped in that Oak park area and the strip down by the barns since day one in the 70's. We camped there for years first with a tent then with a camp trailer. There is also a big rv area out back that a lot of guys bring their big rvs into and camp with full hookups. Out in the fairgrounds different clubs and groups camp in the same areas every year and some have been there in the same spots every year for the past 40 years. When the gates close in the evening and they kick the spectators out the party begins and gets serious.

I always forget about this show! Thanks for sharing the pictures,

  18. It wasn't an all in Hot Rod, but this '39 Chrysler was pretty skookum. I think it's the only one I circled back to see twice. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1407087737.467629.jpg

Also, thankfully the only car that the wee ones touched was with permission, when he leaned against the step on that fire truck.

"You know Gil Gonzales? Don't know Gil huh?..."

  19. Went to High School in Yakima in the '60s (East Valley), haven't been back since. Good to see the car scene is alive and doing well.

Thanks for the pics; my parents were camped there in their escape that they pull with their '50 Chevy hardtop. The flamed '40 coupe belongs to our friend Pete. I used to go every year, but haven't for a few years since I have young children and they're not much for camping in the heat. I plan on taking my oldest for the first time next year. She'll be 4 and should be ready.

  22. I wish I could find more time to actually get outside and look at some cars. Thankfully though because of the cruise in the evening not all is lost.

I am wondering what engine was in the black 40 Ford coupe towards the beginning?? it had dual quads and what looked to be 2 plugs per cylinder.

  28. From Wikipedia (it's a northwest/chinook Indian word)

It has a range of positive meanings. The word can mean 'good,' 'strong,'[2] 'best,' 'powerful,' 'ultimate,' or 'brave.' Something can be skookum meaning 'really good' or 'right on! 'excellent!', or it can be skookum meaning 'tough' or 'durable.

Around here it's kind of an old timey saying.

That is a late model Hemi with a dual carb setup. Installed by a very capable mechanic and old drag racer from the Northwest that seems to put a Hemi in everything he builds. This time he went with the new style Hemi but just didn't want to deal with all that computer stuff if I remember correctly.
