Vintage Tach Collectors Show and Tell

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by scottrod2, Nov 25, 2007.

  1. Here is an odball tach/vacum gauge that belongs to a friend. it is huge like 5" across.

And a sloppy pic of my stewart warner green line that I intend to put a newer movement in so that I can use it. I keep the green line on my desk to remind me that i need to get off my big ass and do something.

My dad had a 67 fairlane lightweight clone with a original rotunda tach that i believe was correct for the car. we are kind of curious on the value of it

    Hey guys,

Maybe you all can help me ID this tach I got off eBay last week. There's no identifying marks from the outside and the seller didn't really have any information either.

It's a plastic housing with no clear sign of where (if anywhere) it'd open up. My guess is that it's maybe late 60s/early 70s, but that's just by looking at the style and the materials. Green, red, and black wires (tach signal, power, and ground).

On the back is a selector for 4, 6, or 8 cylinders. The hole in the center is threaded and the hole in the lower left has a small phillips screw in it, but doesn't seem to do anything when I back it out.

Any thoughts whatsoever would be helpful. Thanks!

That tach is from the fifties and the red needles can be moved to set your high and low limits of your power band.:)

Can anybody identify this one? I posted when I first got it a couple years ago and nobody could say with any certainty. It has no markings other than "made in USA".

My Old 55s tach..The cool part is the needle fit the modern staff of the modern guts. This was a old cable tach.. And now with lights. My 55 and I have been together since high school in 70-71.

I looked up RAC tachometer and it appears that is indeed what I have. Thanks!

Do you have any idea what time period this particular tach is from?

I don't recognise that tach, but if you don't get any other info ...

The green wire is usually the trigger so would run to the -ve terminal on the coil, red to a 12v (ignition) power source and black to ground.

Late 60's Jones mechanical tachs - one has a rev limiter & the cable splitters. Both have the key reset. The Sun tachs are also from the 60's. Note: The RPM #'s on that magneto rev limiter are distributor speed. Max "engine" RPM is 15,000. It is factory set at 7200. I had it tested & calibrated by the OEM

I had to resize my photos to make them smaller- 700x600 pixels or such. Otherwise it won't upload the photos.

Posted using the Semi-Custom double throw-down H.A.M.B. App, now 20% shinier than before.

What kind of drive mechanism do you have for the tach?

The add above shows it to be electric.. mine is/was mechanical. But after 29 years of storing my 55. I now use a modern MSD Electrics. So I used modern in sides with a staff that fit the old stock tach needle. came out nice. I love it.

In the mid 50's through the early 60's, what were common mechanical tachs one would see? I'm building a 265 for my coupe and will be running a Mallory dist w/ cable drive.

Just like in the brochure I posted, there were mechanical versions of both the tach and speedo that didn't have the extra blob on the back as used in the electric ones.

I bought this one at a swap-meet a few years ago.

It is made in New Zealand and pretty rare I would think - I have never seen another one like it.

One I found in a friends grandfathers loft. Unfortunately he is not around anymore so I dont know what its out of. Any ideas of an era? I would love to find a matching temp gauge for it. IMG_0470.JPG IMG_0471.JPG
