5.50x16 and 6.50x16 Blockleys on Buffalo wires

I'm ran 5.50 and 6.00 x 16 Blockleys on my old hillclimb T modified.
I have them in a 19" on my T Coupe and they were brilliant driving home in the heavy rain at around 55-65...

I see the steering wheel is offset to the left. At first I wondered if that was just to get the cowl steering box to package. Then I started to think maybe it was placed that way intentionally to make it more comfortable for the driver to lean left in turns?

Done anywhere else? (I wish I'd thought of that.)

Hello, I am new to this forum and was interested to see the post about the ERA at Indy. A friend of mine in the UK just purchased this car and is starting into a restoration project to get the car running again. We are looking for any photos or history of the car during it's visit to Indy, and are curious if you happen to know more about this. Thanks

 

Dave, Welcome to the HAMB! I never knew an ERA made it to INDY. How many cars did they build, and how many exist today? I've seen a few that came over for Vintage racing, think one or two live here now. Great cars. Bob

Looking for more info. Have had the help of a past curator from the National Sprint car hall of fame assist me in seeking info on a sprint car driver from mid 1950's by the name of Norm Guay. The time line for Norm racing lines up with Sharon Speedway in Ohio. Eldora racing events did not match. I tried reaching out to Sharon speedway but got no response. Does anyone know of a group that might have history of this venue in the mid 1950's. Possibly driver info from then? Again Norm drove a Buick Nailhead sprinter every other weekend there. Any known owners or drivers of these Buick powered sprinters back then. Thanks for any help.

That would be great if you can. Appreciate any help on this. Norm is a great guy who went for it as a young man. But as we all know getting married put the damper on things. But he still has that twinkle in his eyes when he sees old Sprint cars and Stockers. He smile is infectious when we chat about the 1950's and 60's. Thanks.

Do you know the bore on your 270? Which head casting number do you have?

 

Yes those are the same. Since my last post we found the Venolia name cast into the underside of the pistons. The bore is 3.15/16". I had to use a 302cu head gasket to get clearance.

 

Not ez find rings today. I had trouble finding them in 1975. Stock 270 bore is 3.78125. 3-15/16” is 3.9375. That’s a .156” over bore.
I have a set of Venolias that were 3-31/32” made for an under 300” class in the 50’s. Rings were wider back then too.

 

Here is the Mel Leighton famous #21 sprint car powered by a 4 Port Riley. A long and successful history starting in 1938 with Mel driving and then hiring Johnnie Parsons, Bob Sweikert, Jack McGrath and others to drive. The picture of the car flipping is from the August 9th 1948 issue of Life Magazine with driver Orvelle Epperley flying out of the car and losing part of his leg. Also pictured are it's 4 port Riley, the car at a WRA event with Walt James driving and at home in its garage with its sister 29 RPU (with a 2 port).

 

Anybody have any suggestions to make, or existing pieces that have the compound curves, for the two front corners of the foot/floor pan on a sprinter? I remember seeing some made from sugar scoops (!)

I would imagine, being aluminum, they could be formed over something like an acetylene tank cap.
Not that I’ve ever done that, just thinking out loud.

Probably many of you guys who could do it in an hour or less!
