In L.A., the Super Modified evolved out of the Jalopy racers, i.e. your basic 32 Ford Flathead. Guys started sectioning and channeling the bodies, lowering the frames, and eventually somebody (Vallie Engelhauf maybe?) dropped an overhead motor in one. About that time they decided Jalopy didn't fit anymore and they became the Supermod. Pretty much the same thing was happening in San Diego but they decided to call them Sportsmen. In Arizona they were Full-house Jalopies. Next thing you know the bodies were fiberglass, and guys like Don Edmunds started making tube framed cars. Then somebody figured out you could put a cage on a Sprint Car and voila! You had yourself a Super. C.A.R. in LA made the guys put a vestigal roof on, and the SDRA in San Diego outlawed boat-tails but it wasn't that hard to take your CRA sprinter home after Saturday night, bolt a cage/roof (and maybe a wing) on, swap out the tail and come right back out Sunday and run with the Supers. When the Sprint Car associations decided to mandate cages that just about spelled the end of the dirt Super Modifieds in California. Oh yeah; I forgot to mention that you needed a different setup to run asphalt by now, but that's a whole other story...

Yeah, in some areas the difference between sprints/supers wasn't much. But in other places they tried to keep easily converted sprints out. Some use to call them 30x90 cars which was the required width of the frame and the min. wheelbase, which, of course, was bigger than a typical sprint car.

They had a lot of different nicknames, didn't they? 30 x 90's Cutdowns, "Bugs". Some sanctioning bodies required square tube frames, some outlawed injection; probably one of the biggest problems was a lack of unified rules. Heck, they couldn't even agree on what to call them, could they? I think the one thing that may have saved asphalt Supers is that they had become so vastly different by the time Sprint Cars replaced dirt Supers in most parts of the country that an upright Sprint was an inferior product on a paved track. Of course, all of this was happening at the sunset of the era that this thread is intended to cover, so my apologies for getting too far off the subject...

I just want to thank all you fellows who lived in that era and watched "the sunset" live. I chose a different path (drag racing) and did not participate in any form of circle track racing, so I look forward to hearing from all of you who were there, and I find your stories both compelling and educational.

The Mocked up BODY and remaining parts of the Brisko 6 arrived today. This car will get re-built back to Running condition but NOT RESTORED.

...this car hold a very interesting (awesome) record at Indy...
    Any guesses?

I know, but I read it on Facebook today so it doesn't count! Amazing record by the way! I would like to visit the shop some time if possible to see it.

I didn't see it on Facebook, just a guess: The oldest chassis to make the race? Wish I could do aluminum body work like that :)

This could be a real can of worms, trying to "define" Modified or Super Modified. Rootie can back me on this, but even here in Colorado the lines were blurred. We had 2 racetracks (within a 15-20 mile distance from each other) Englewood and Lakeside that ran "modifieds". In the 50s, the cars were pretty similar, but as time went on, each evolved at a different rate. The Lakeside (CARC) cars were less sophisticated ('32ford frame rails, coupe bodies) whereas the Englewood (ERA) cars advanced all the way up to offset roadster type cars. For a time at the end of the season, the clubs would run a combined show. Both clubs still run, but nowadays a CARC car is purpose built tube chassis with a fiberglass replica coupe body, although on occasion, one of the old '32 framed coupes males an appearance.

I'm gonna chime in on the Modified/Super Modified distinction. A Modified was allowed to have engine modifications, including engine swaps. They retained a production frame, with possibly some suspension mods allowed. A Super Modified, was pretty much a run whatcha brung kinda deal. Fabricated frames and suspension pieces were what separated the two classes in the early days of Super Modifieds, in my humble opinion.

Looking for pictures of the old goggle/leather masks combo that dirt racers used to wear before full face helmets. Doesn't matter if it's open wheel, stock car or motorcycle. If it doesn't fit the thread requirements please PM me. Thanks!

I was there that day and Davis gave everybody a thrill. I believe the car was #27 and I heard that the trailer broke loose from whatever was hauling the car. I remember that the car was primered.

Saw today on Hosehead and Indiana Open Wheel that Steve Kinser will retire after the 2014 season.

Added note 12/12/13: Cancel the panic. Steve will be retiring from running the WOO full time , but is not retiring from driving. Sorry about any confusion.

Check out latest issue of Hot Rod mag (Feb/2014). Page 108 Has build pix of 1962 Offy Roadster #14 driven by Don Branson. Also Page 92 has unusual use of Ford twin cam.

Hi Guys, I could use some help. I'm looking for my dad's Studebaker powered sprint car number 69 " Canadian Offy "as pictured on page 456 of this thread. The last time I saw it was in the Cincinatti OH area. If anyone has seen it please contact me. Thank you!

On the sprint/supermodified differences, the comment that it differed in some areas, associations, etc. is on the money, and sometimes it depended on the need for a car count or the lenience of the tech officials.

I recall looking at a USAC sprint car one day at Salem, and seeing a piece of iron bolted to the left side tubular frame rail. The owner was a friend, and I asked what purpose it served.

He said that was so they could pass tech at an area track which ran supermodifieds. The car had to have started as a "stock" frame. The piece of metal was cut off of a '32 Ford.

"We cut the rest of the frame away and bolted our car to it," he said. "That's our story and we're sticking to it."

You're right, it could be a pretty fine line between them some places.
