not sure if Doug Howells wrenched on the campbell car[more than likely]there was a while when Mack would drive Dougs car at the local shows and Campbells car in IMCA shows.I was just starting to follow racing and didnt know many of the details. The photo you show is one of Dougs leffler cars-possibly the one I bought damaged from Dougs future son-in-law Lee Roy Grosz.I put a crude torsion bar front[I didnt know it was crude at the time lol]and ran it for a few years.car ended up in northern mn and I heard later restored

    Buildy,

I think there are some spelling errors on the 55 sandwich board. I believe it is John Hanscom, not Hanson and Warren Hobbs, not Warren Harbs - I may be wrong.

    Thanks!

That is my uncle Jerry Karl in Dusty Thacker`s #35 behind Hobbs. I`d say 1967, or maybe 66.

I have a theory on the mis-spellings on the info boards. I sent you a message.

Spike, Thanks for the correction. My 1967 photo is identified as Warren Hobbs. Harbs it is!

Beletsky sold the car to a Nelson. Was driven by amoung others Bob Hillis and Chuck Arnold. Beltesky bought the JH Rose chevy which Branson won with at Williams Grove opener for a timing of Nelson ownership.

I remember the Jake Vargo sprint car as a maroon and white car. I will hazard a guess and say I think the guy walking with Tommy Hinnershitz is Bobby Grimm.

Bobby Grim was one of the observers that observed me during my driver test and later was a big help giving me pointers on how to get around the speedway. Denny Z

  20. I think Nelson once owned the ex Malloy/D. Carter car. I have a pic of it
at one of the early Grove Oldtimer Shows, red, white & blue, # 4.
He also owned a midget at one time.

I think Mel Nelson owned the former Montgomery Offy that Mike Joseph drove in 1948. The car was a yellow and black number 1 K.K. Offy. I believe Mel ran it at Trenton in 1959.

You guys should know, is there a name for the 'tire deflector' things on rear radius rods or hairpins before the rear tire?

Tommy Hinnershitz and Bobby Grim were who came to mind when I found the photo. My guess is 1960 for the photo, but would welcome input from others who may have been around back then.

Dick Linder died in 1959,at Trenton, I believe. Checking my 1959 USAC yearbook, the Vargo car was #7 in 1959,but #5 in my photo.

I've heard them called "kickouts" or "side nerfs".
Bob Bogan called bumpers and nerf bars "rootin' irons". That has always been my favorite.

That picture of Hinnershitz and Grimm is 1960 Horn Schindler at the Grove.

Mel Nelson also owned the car George Amick was killed in. I seem to remember bill Randall trying to qualify it at Trenton.

Linder was killed at Trenton, but in the Vargo champ car, not the sprinter.

I always heard them called "nerf bars". With the narrow tires back then, cars would sometimes lock wheels, or get a wheel inside the other guys wheel. This made for terrible double flips. The nerf bars stopped this in most cases.
