Okay Larrypfitz... (and anyone else) Clear something up for me that I noticed this week. I noticed The Beautiful Black #4 Stapp sprinter that is pictured above at Winchester is NOT the same Beautiful Black #4 Stapp sprinter I have pics of.. There both great cars, but being a race car "Lettering guy" I noticed differences right away.

What's the story? is the the one at Winchester a "recreation" or as there often was... they are both the real thing from different years?

Thanks guys, I'm not harpin on anyone car here, just want my info right on two of my favorite sprinters I've seen in a long time!

    Thanks.

First.. The one I've got pics of. (is this one yours Larrypfitz?)

A couple of years back Gene Heater was compiling the records of Greenville (OH) Speedway. With his passing, does anyone know what may have become of his work? Does anyone have contact information for his brother?

Greenville Speedway dates back to the 20's and 30's and was located roughly between Dayton and Eldora.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    MILLER TIME!!

As many of you know I'm a big Miller fan. And a lot of you know one of the most famous Millers ol' Harry ever built was the FWD Miller, known to most as the "Last Great Miller". Now, if your really dialed in on your Miller history, or read the the book "Last great miller", or... read this thread back a year or so ago.. :D You will know find out that When Harry Miller built the All Wheel Drive V8 miller for the FWD company, he also built himself one! Yes, there were TWO! The second car, commonly called the "Mule car" was raced at Indy, and in europeat the Grand Prix's.
Ever heard the story about the Miller in the late 30's blowing it's engine down the main front stretch and threw a rod out the side of the engine which shot past ADOLF HITLER'S head and lodged into a wooden sign behind him? That was the second fwd Miller..

Well, our friend Jim at Zakira's is currently sweeping the globe, piecing the "Mule car" back together. I reported a while ago here that he had the original Grille shell, front drive assembly, Miller carbs, gear box, oil tank, Gas tank (missing the neck and cap) and a few other important things.

    NOW HE HAS MORE!!

I stopped in this morning to document for us, the ORIGINAL engine case, cylinder blocks (one with a hole from the rod that wizzed by Hitler), clutch, HEADERS! and the original Gas cap and neck!!

PLUS!!! All the original wooden bucks, and drawings for the second engine that was missing out of there extensive collection.

    Here's a look into history..

Now, the "Mule car" was red, and DID NOT have the FWD letters on it.

I think this is the "real" original. Part of Tom Malloy's collection in Calif.

    Hi Jerracer,
The car in your photo is indeed Larrys car. If you look at the photos from the magazine article you can see that the Stapp name is on the right side only, which was common then for the grandstand side only. Also, you can see Larrys sign in the backround. I guess Larry can tell us the occasion and location of the photo.

    Hi Guys,

The photo in Jerracer's post was taken on October 21, 2006 at the 4th Annual Legends of Ascot Reunion held at Perris Speedway, CA. That's my "real" 1965 Stapp #4 sprinter up-front in the photo. The red car next to it is Chuck Fausel's Babineau replica, Maserati-powered Novi. And the black and white #21 is Tom's "real" HOW car. As many know, Tom is one of the truly great guys in our hobby. It's always an honor to be at an event or on the track with him.

Corngrower, back in the day it was not uncommon to have no graphics on the left side of the hood. Most paying customers viewed the cars from stands "outside" the oval, seeing only the right side of the hood as the cars went by. I was fortunate to find many, many photos of my car as we approached the restoration -- "Babe Stapp Chevy", on the right side only, is the way she ran...

    Sumar Special information:
The "Sumar Special" streamliner, actually a Kurtis-Kraft chassis ('385-55') with a Meyer-Drake Offy 270 ('175'). Jimmy Daywalt drove the car (#48) after removing the streamlining at Indy in 1955, finishing 9th. Teague practiced in it (#47) the following year, but did not qualify. Feb. 10, 1959, Marshall Teague sets an unofficial closed course speed record of 171.821 mph in the Sumar Streamliner at the, then just completed, Daytona International Speedway, two days after his record run, Teague crashed fatally, trying to reach 180 mph.

There is a Jimmy Daywalt tribute sight that goes into more detail about the car, Dewalts experiences driving the car, etc.
    http://www.angelfire.com/in4/jimmydaywalt/1955.htm

The car originally co-owned by Don Smith and Chapman Root, as stated earlier on this thread, is in the Chapman Root "wing" of the Daytona Beach Museum of Arts and Sciences. If you get in the Daytona area the museum is worth a visit, especially the 'Root Wing".

Very cool! As a painter, I've made decisions on "Grand stand side" before.. Hell, when I raced, the "More Important $" sponsors got the right side! :D

    Good history guys..

    Thanks,

now.. I'm off to the MACHINE GUN SHOOT in Knob Creek Ky. in the morning! I love going there!! It's pure AMERICANA!!

Actually, Don Smith was out of Sumar by the time the streamliner was built. He was only in it for about one year before he sold out to Chapman Root. If you notice, all of the later Sumar cars have the Sumar logo, Chapman Root's Sumar Special.
I also have a photo album of Denny Jameson's Sumar Streamliner recreation in the "Photo Gallery" section of my Indy roadster website. Check it out at:http://indyroadsters.webs.com/apps/photos/album?albumid=6041244

  17. Thanks to everyone for sharing their knowledge to my earlier question about the Sumar Special recreation...the links and pix all help too...I just hope that one day the 'new' Sumar Special's owner takes it for a spin at Salem, Winchester or Milwaukee and we all get a chance to see and hear it here somehow. Denny Jameson is creating a true piece of rolling sculpture.
    Thanks again-Mark

Rice-a-roni was a nickname dunno if they have it in Australia, but it is a instant flavored rice mix in a box in the USA, gatorade was the sponsor on his USAC Sprint car a few years

  20. Didn't Gary "Preacher" Patterson give him that nickname in Australia?

The AMBLER boxes were quite common for awhile - so was another by BELL.
I once had a rail V8-60 (unknown history) with a BELL box .. very cumbersome to change gears.

How about telling us about the Speedcar in your Avtar, oh and you might have to explain the some of these guys what a Speedcar is. Did you happen to go to any races in the 70's at the Sidney Showgrounds or Parramatta? Rutherford and Vogler drove my dad's cars in Australia for a few years

Hey Corngrower, First of all thanks for starting this thread. I come here all the time to check out the cool pics from the past to bring back memories. I also letter race cars -just recently I did a Kurtis midget (late 40's vintage) but was unable to get pics because my camera was stolen just before I did it. He ran it in a WRA vintage meet this past weekend so I'll see if I can find shots of it off a website.

Having grown up in the 60's and going to Ascot all those years I have lots of memories from that time. I've got some pics packed away in storage and if i ever find them i'll post some here.

Another highlight for enthusiasts was the Miller 91 Front Drive Engine, considered one of the most important Miller artifacts to come to the market in decades. Attracting spirited bidding, the Miller engine nearly tripled its original estimate, selling for $297,000.

Additional auction highlights included a historic
1949 Belanger Special Indy Race Car with impressive race history for $192,500 and and a 1930 Bugatti Type 44 Touring for $187,000.
