The sponsorship was named for Don Lee by Tommy, his son. I think Don was deceased by then, but he had left quite a bit of history behind.
Don Lee owned an LA Cadillac agency and that also had a coach building shop for those very wealthy car buyers that wanted something distinctive. Harley Earl, the dean of GM designers got his start at Lee’s coach works. There was also a radio station Lee owned. His son Tommy had a beautiful, Offenhauser powered car that he had Frank Kurtis build, it was streetable and was often seen at the dry lakes. Tommy was active in the race scene and it was him that gave the sponsorships to honor his fathers legacy.
