Having been born in Hollywood in 1939, I remember this oil well on La Cienega Blvd. very well. It was erected some time in the very early 1900's. The street itself was not built for several years after the well was there. From what I recall, it was deactivated in the middle 1940's and shortly after, the wooden tower was removed, but the pump was left on the island (which had been reduced in size by about 2/3rds) for several more years.
