Scary stuff, A friend of mine was a nuclear safety officer in the RCAF, and went to Nevada to monitor 3 tests from the trenches. He died about 15 years ago, as a result of a weird, rare, bone cancer, which may have been caused by his constant exposure both there and at work.
Some of the military people were actually out in the open, testing different types of protective gear.

Capitola, Ca. 1950's movie with lots of street scenes. I was surprised how many of the buildings are still there today.
