    Hello,

Much has been written about Tony Waters “Giant Killer” roadster from Bakersfield, CA. To many, it was a shock that a Modified Roadster could win round after round in the Top Eliminator races up to the Finals of the 1st March Meet at Famoso in 1959.

“In 1954, Tony built a crankshaft driven supercharged DeSoto and put it into his '25 Model T track roadster, which came to be known as the "Giant Killer". A founding member of the Smokers Car Club of Bakersfield, Tony and his partner Jim Sughrue became the guys to beat at the tracks around the West Coast. With help from Irv and Gary Guinn of Bakersfield, Tony dominated the roadster class and ended up as the runner up in the 1st "March Meet" in 1959.”

My brother and I read about the Bakersfield race in March of 1959 and told ourselves to attend in 1960, despite what we were doing. (Then, at the time in 1960, it was the 1940 Willys with a 283 SBC + 6 Strombergs in the B/Gas Coupe class. We were in the development stage with our Willys Coupe and at this point in racing, we were considering going to a larger motor.) The wait to see Tony Waters’s roadster did not have to be March of 1960, as we found out. That roadster just happened to be at the famed, Riverside Raceway, "East vs. West" meet in all of its purple glory in December of 1959.
