... They had to put a fence up around the base after finding people living under it ...
The first photo is of my grand parents and their model T roadster.
Those people were probably just looking for somewhere to re-tire.
I live 1/4 mile from the giant tire. I do not believe the fence was erected due to squatters. More likely to prevent vandalism and liability concerns.
The first photo is A.J. Foyt in the ex-Marv Edwards midget at the Houston Astrodome; I'm guessing around 1969.
The next attached photo is also from 1969 shows Johnny Parsons in Joe Hunt's dirt car on the Riverside road course. Parsons' father had also driven for Hunt back in 1941 in one of the Oakland 500 mile races.
The last shot shows Bobby Grim's turbocharged Offy roadster at Indianapolis in 1966. The car was taken out in the first lap crash after starting in the last row. Years later I heard an interview with Grim where he thought the car had never lived up to its potential because mechanic Herb Porter wouldn't try different gearing to keep the turbo impeller spinning. As a result the engine bogged down with no throttle response most of the way around the track.
