    Hello,

The New Year comes to all of us without any prodding. The memories are another year older and sometimes getting harder to remember. This is a great photo capture of the Moon Corvette. It was the epitome of all things "Moon" at the time.

Two things from this very cool looking, early Corvette brings to mind some of our early hot rod days and builds. One, those nice Moon Discs happen to be everyone’s favorite way to get any car to look like a racer and also look fast. It did have some smooth design qualities on the Bonneville racers for an advantage, but for the street, it was just a smooth looking add on for Hot rods and custom cars.

The second was the “in-the-cab/cockpit, Moon aluminum gas tank and pump, with the added on/off lever.” This was "the" set up for the era. These small gas tanks held just enough gas to do what your car was designed to do, from the build. The pump made sure the gas was flowing into the carbs or injectors. The tank was smooth as we all have seen in shops or older cars.

Before 1960, these tanks were the set-up of the day. The driver was prepped for a run at the drags or the mile long straight away. There was enough gas to make the run and plenty to spare, coming back to the pit area. At the time, no one knew the dangers involved with a gasoline container so close to the driver and the motor/transmission. The safety inspection teams looked for a clutch/bellhousing scattershield of some kind and when they saw it from below, the car was approved. These scattershields were skimpy, but followed the rules to the letter. NO 360 DEGREE WHOLE COVERAGE SCATTERSHIELDS AS YET.

It was the Moon tank that looked good, had great access for the driver, and the short line to the motor was easy to install. Protected from possible flying parts? No one remembers any talk of protection from those parts as our early builds were supposed to be virtually blow up proof.

Picture this Moon Tank set up inside of most drag racing cars of the late 50s to mid 1960.

We had installed a complete Moon Aluminum tank, mounts and hand pump inside of the 1940 Willys coupe interior space. It was cramped for the passenger on our forays on the street in Bixby Knolls, But for the drags, everything was within one arm length, the gas tank, the hand pump, the on/off, etc.

The final report was noted in the August 1960 Drag News about moving the Moon Tanks out of the cab or near the driver. By September, all tanks were moved or the cars were not allowed to race. Plus, the lines had to be enclosed in a metal conduit.

A definite misprint of C/Altered should have read C/Gas coupe.
