C/Gas was such a cool class!
The Palmers Drugs building is still there.
This photo was taken in 1951.
The boy in the photo is a 13 year old Bruce McLaren. who was diagnosed with a crippling "Perthes Disease"
So as a boy he needed crutches, and eventually 1 leg was shorter than the other requiring special footwear, and he had to learn to walk again.
Bruce overcame his handicap to be the youngest F1 winner in his time , Win the 24 hours of LeMans for Ford in 1966, and Totally dominate the CanAm series until his death at 32 years old in 1970.
His legacy went on ,with Indy Cars, F1 Cars and today McLaren Supercars

What do we have here, a tail dragger?
My dad worked with McLaren in the Can Am series and in 1969 during one of my visits to the shop with my dad Bruce gave me one of his driving suits. I still have it after all these years and remembering those times as a kid hanging around the shop brings back great memories.
Do you wanna swap that old suit for a new one?
I really do appreciate all your photos, but man you really need to get a life. Step away from the computer for a bit and find something in life to enjoy.

It would suck for the rest of us if Gary got a different hobby.
Enjoy the photos he works tirelessly to find and post. Without telling someone you never met what to do. Really.
Thanks to Gary and y'all I have something to look at when I can't sleep.
Great set of pictures. Foreign car alert! Man, that's got to be the earliest bug I've seen so far in this thread. Don't know what the other two are but great photo's jchav62!!! Also anyone know whats going on with the helicopter? Jim E. OKC
maybe more accurate to say "Bango".

How about a Simca Aronde next to the Fiat ? .( half behind the bus )
Is this The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island? Can't be as they don't allow cars.
Yea Yea so I'm standing on the roof never mind it's just any old beater
Yes it is the Grand Hotel and cars are not allowed but money has a strange effect on greasing ones palms. I would bet that a donation may have been made to supply more manure carts by someone at GM when they were staying at the Governor's house next door.
Also cars were allowed for the movie "Somewhere in Time" so if it serves the Chamber of Commerce exceptions may be made.
There is a fixer-upper west of the hotel...……...
Rootie, this first one is a great Big Car photo but I have no idea where it is or who the drivers are. Is there any info on this one?
And the second looks like it might be part of a Firestone tire test. I would guess at Bay Meadows in 1951. Freddie Agabashian is the driver in the Pat Clancy car and Agabashian did do tire tests around that time. That's Firestone boss Johnny Moore in the suit posing with Agabashian. And the dark haired guy 4th from the left in the Firestone overalls is Bill McCrary who became the Firestone racing tire boss after Moore retired.
Thanks for posting!
