Main St with LA City Hall

    Hello,

We have driven on that street (Main St.) a ton of times (at least 3 times per year) since 1949. My dad worked several blocks from that building. My mom did take us up the street to see that “famous building” back then. A lot of old buildings, if they meet the current earthquake standards, are re-purposed as new offices or business centers. This icon of a building has had many earthquake retrofit construction events over the years and is still standing as an LA City Landmark.

That tall building with the top spire is the Los Angeles City Hall building, built in 1928. Almost every movie or TV show located in Los Angeles has a photo or a panning view of the building. It is a standard thing to do, just so people all over the world know that the movie/TV show is located in Los Angeles. (similar to the Hollywood sign)

Our favorite restaurant in Los Angeles is located just right around the corner, 3 minutes away on Alameda, Phillipe’s French Dipped Sandwich Restaurant. It is celebrating 110 years and is one of the oldest restaurants still standing. In 1951 it finally moved to the current location.

You meet the nicest people here, actors, actresses, lawyers, detectives, fire captains, gardeners, teachers, old So Cal drag racers at their monthly luncheon, hot rodders, and just plain folks. Sawdust floors, ceiling fans, long counter tables and stools are the sturdiest around. The food…legendary.

LA City Hall + Phillipe’s Restaurant, legendary icons of LA History within walking distance of each other.

“There is an air of camaraderie among the customers, a kind of unspoken friendliness and consideration that’s rare in a big city . . . The customers are people of all kinds: shoppers, residents of nearby Chinatown, businessmen, Amtrak workers from the station, people who have been coming here for years and are now bringing their children. More than any other place I can think of, Philippe’s typifies the democratic spirit of Los Angeles . . .”
