    Hello,
Having surfed at Anderson Street and back then, deep into the private community called Surfside Colony brings back memories of our beginnings in the surf world. The surf breaks were good and it led up to the northern border of the Navy ammunition loading bay jetty, as seen from the PCH Coast Highway. This northern border had the long rock jetty (Surfside Jetty) that became a locals only “big wave” place during the winters and could be seen from the highway bridge on a clear day.

It was well known to locals only as the hordes of people just drove by this secluded beach area for the pickings farther south at the Huntington Beach Cliffs and Pier. So, this place was relatively unknown until a local kid that lived in Surfside started becoming famous in the surfing community.

As the surf sessions went into our cruising days, the 58 Impala, the 40 Sedan Delivery, and later on more station wagons and vans led to a first stop over to check out the swell. This was a ritual and if the swell was small, a bite to eat at the local diner around the corner on PCH was the mode of the day. (a Superman poster was above the old phone booth on the highway in front of the diner. The Harbor House and Woody's Diner are just around the corner.)

Early Surfside Colony history starts in 1929 and in 1969, became part of Seal Beach as the city expanded its borders beyond the huge Naval Weapons Station land. There was a battle from the residents of Surfside as to which city would incorporate this area to expand their own city borders. Huntington Beach had the students in their system and Seal Beach was closer in distance, despite the separation of the Naval Weapons Station property between. In 1969, Surfside became part of Seal Beach.

Lou Bingham towing his race car from Southern Cal. to Bonneville. The trip was chronicled in Rod & Custom magazine back in the day.
