The 1954 Dodge wagon of the NHRA Safety Safari. A replica has been made and debuted at SEMA around '04 and made other appearances since.

After we got off of the Long Beach Freeway on downtown exit, this is the road towards the Long Beach shoreline, The Pike, and the Belmont Shore/ Seal Beach area. It was part of our 60s hot rod cruising route and today, starts the great shoreline view drive, all along the Long Beach road heading East.

    Hey Gary,
Nice find of this old photograph. This was Long Beach on Ocean Blvd going towards the downtown area. The large glass building in the middle of the photo is the Long Beach Criminal Courts Bldg and the holding cells. Back then, if you were arrested, then held over for trial or parental meeting with the police supervisor, that was where you had to go. Today, that building is in another tear down and upgrade stage.

The “Red Cars” or trolleys were one way of getting across a portion of Long Beach and was the main line connected to Los Angeles prior to the freeways. Even after the freeways were built, they existed and have been singled down to the new “Blue Line” to Los Angeles.

Since my mom did not drive back then, we took these Red Cars to Los Angeles to visit friends and family from 1950-1957. The local city buses allowed us to go to the Ocean Blvd Station. From there, the Red Cars went all the way to near the 7th Street Terminal for taxi access to downtown Los Angeles. (the Red Cars went right through some “terrific neighborhoods” on the way to the 7th St. Station)

    Jnaki

“The Pacific Electric Railway Company, nicknamed the Red Cars, was a privately owned mass transit system in Southern California consisting of electrically powered streetcars, inter-urbancars, and buses and was the largest electric railway system in the world in the 1920s.

Southern District: Long Beach, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, San Pedro via Dominguez, Santa Ana, El Segundo, Redondo Beach via Gardena, and San Pedro Via Torrance.”

This road (Ocean Blvd.) going west over the LA River and the Long Beach Freeway was very straight. But, since the police station was right there, not much in the way of late night street activity happened. There were lots of police cars cruising around, due to the fact that the Navy Base was just across the river and The Pike was the biggest draw for their leisure activities…

Pretty sure this is in La Grande, Oregon. Snapped a pic on my way home from Speedweek a few years ago.
