    Try doing that in todays cars, it wouldn't even fit in a Caddy trunk nowadays.

  7. It is front wheel drive, hence the twin wheels. I am not sure of the make of this one. Jay Leno has a front drive fire truck, though his has transverse engine.
    I see a date of November 1922. That is a 1923 Buick being built.

    Jim, I've certainly been wrong as well. I was wrong about Mauri Rose because I associated the #16 car with him since he drove it in 1941. It turns out it had the same number and paint job post war in 1946 and Robson drove it twice in 1946 once at Milwaukee and once at Atlanta. Robson was killed in this car at Atlanta.

    But the guardrail does look like Langhorne; at least to me. And I had to look it up but Robson started 2nd with Horn on the pole in June, 1946 at Langhorne. And that does look like a photo taken right after the green was thrown.

    San Fernando Drag Strip (or Raceway) I was never sure which. We just called it "The Pond". Opened in 1955, closed in 1967. I loved that place...

    This may have been the dragster in the left lane, Jack Chrisman's car. Not many that I can remember that had a pointy roll bar...

    My friends and I used to run at San Fernando all the time in the early '60's and I never heard anyone call it The Pond.

    I didn't know that Ames had a drag strip! But I guess since it operated in 1957 to 1959 I would have had little interest in racing. Any time you have a dragstrip with 60 feet of asphalt and the rest is dirt, you know you’ve got old school drag racing at its finest on your hands. Ames Dragstrip was operated by a car club of high school and college-aged gearheads known as the Nightcrawlers.

    Races were held every Sunday during the summer, with time trials beginning at 10 A.M. and eliminations kicking off at 2 P.M., and all rules and regulations were outlined by the national headquarters of the Automobile Timing Association of America. The track operated financially on its back gate receipts, and in early 1958, with the help of local business establishments, the Nightcrawlers added 200 feet of concrete to the existing 60 feet, with hopes of one day having a fully paved quarter mile.

    Despite being primarily dirt and rather primitive even for the time, Ames had full electronic timers and took safety seriously, with the racetrack fully fenced in to keep spectators away from the speeding vehicles.

    Hello,
    Here is an interesting story about one of the top racers at the time. It is about the POND:
    Dick Harryman was one of the top Gas Coupe and Sedan builders and racers. His reputation is/was outstanding as one of the best in that class.

    “The cool part was about the time Dick Harryman was "IT," when it came to running at San Fernando. (Harryman ran a ’50 Olds Gasser at San Fernando Drag Strip. Harryman was the guy who named San Fernando “the Pond” by saying, “Rather than run other big dragstrips he’d prefer to be a big fish in a small pond,” and Pond stuck.) “He ran a B&M Hydro in his ’50 Gasser Olds. We’d sit on the dirt mound and watch him race. Harryman never had a front bumper on his Olds, for the weight I guess.”

    Hello,

    In 1959, Mickey Brown was on a rampage at Lions Dragstrip and other local race tracks. He was the first to go over 150 mph in the ¼ mile. His battles at Long Beach were epic. The most sought after match up was against the Joe Mailliard/Paul Nicolini’s Sidewinder race car. These exciting events all led to the tragic end for Mickey Brown.

    Car: Scrima-Adams-Smith Olds-powered dragster
    Biographical: Ronnie Scrima and Mort Smith were testing a new short wheelbase (93") dragster at Lions. They had dropped Gene Adams's Oldsmobile engine in the car, but were having a hard time getting it down the track. Mickey Brown had left his own Olds-powered dragster at home and he offered to see if he could drive the car.

    About 100 feet from the starting line, he lost control and flipped upside down, suffering fatal injuries because his head got outside the confines of the roll bar. He was transported to Seaside Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His wife witnessed the crash. Racers remembered him as a kind of wild, but fun-loving kid. He was the first man to go over 150 MPH in a gas dragster.
