    Hello,

Nice photo capture of our favorite delivery truck. Back in the 50’s, in our Westside neighborhood of Long Beach, there was a restaurant called Currie’s. It was a family restaurant that drew droves of people from all over. The food was good, the atmosphere was ok, but the dessert was outstanding. Yes, Currie’s served this ice cream that we could not get anywhere else.

Our family was able to dine at the Currie’s Restaurant many times, as it was a place to go for celebrating family events. The locals/relatives packed this place almost weekly.

The restaurant was across the street from one of the only drive-in restaurants (name eludes me to this day...) in the whole Southwest area of Long Beach. (a Jack in The Box is located there today. The Curries Restaurant got torn down and a McDonalds is there, now.)

In the 60s, McConnells, Wil Wright’s, and home-made from those “twirly” machines were popular. Even the Sav-On Drug, Woolworth and Kress Stores ice cream was ok, in a pinch. But, nothing matched the Currie’s ice cream for quality. This was ICE CREAM.

When we saw this truck, as young as we were, we rode our bicycles behind the truck back over the freeway and LA River to their local warehouse. Obviously, we were hoping for free ice cream samples. We got that idea since the nearby Coca Cola Bottling plant did give out samples. The Coca Cola Bottling Plant was on the way home from the Currie’s warehouse/plant. “Two birds with one adventure…” Actually, it was three birds, as there was a Weber’s Bread Factory just down the street from the Coca Cola Plant.

P.S. (currently) The Broadway address is near an newer elementary school and the LB District Courts building.
