I love everything about this old photo. Dirt pits and an occasional tree, and a chilly morning. Street tires stacked in pairs. They were used on the cars while being flat-towed to and from the track. Tool boxes that you could pick up and stick in your trunk. Tool boxes today would require a fork-lift to pick them up. No E-Z-Ups, they had not been invented yet. A drag strip on some prairie somewhere (probably Iowa), and no buildings sticking up everywhere. It was a different time. It's a different world today...

I have pictures from last summer where I am standing in the parking lot in the middle left hand side of this picture. That is the Arizona side. The parking areas have been re-paved, but not much else has changed.

I had this roadster pic on my computer at work as a desktop for a while years ago. The version I had had "Ike Hanks" written on it.

Edit: found a better resolution version of it with the writing visible:

Ike owned it after Pete, here it's on the pole at Portland Speedway in '51. Other notables in the race, George Amick, (2nd @ Indy in '58), Bob Donker (cutaway drawing by Rex Burnett in Hot Rod) Ernie Koch (in Rolla Vollstedt's #1) , and Lemoine Fry (California car). I will have to ask my old buddy Jack Greiner if that is Pete or Ike in the other photo, he will know for sure ! IMG_1492.JPG
