We had a 58 Buick wagon like the blue one in the picture when I got my drivers license in 67, except ours was pink and white. Try being cool at HS driving a big boat pink station wagon! At least it had dual glass packs and would do a decent burnout!!

1960's photo of Santa Claus Lane in Carpenteria, South of Santa Barbara

    Hey Guys,

Nice photo capture. Times have changed since way back then. When we drove by this place during the most recent Thanksgiving week, it was a surprise NOT to see this giant Santa Claus facing the freeway. We used to stop here for any kind of snacks to and from the surf spots in the area, throughout the years.

It was a popular roadside attraction all season long and during the holidays, the place was packed for obvious reasons. In the large photo posted above, it looks like a 1960 Chevy station wagon and a 1962 Rambler sedan. Also, in the lower photo, there are a bunch of 50's and 60's cars and wagons.

As a matter of fact, if you can get onto the next door Padaro Lane property, there is a clean break that is one of the best empty surf spots in So Cal. But, you have to know which alley to go through to the ocean. The break is protected from public sight from the roadway or freeway and the local area is a private property enclave. One of our recent USA Presidents stayed in a giant house at the Padaro Lane homes. (causing a temporary no surfing area) He liked the Santa Claus Lane area, too.

(ASIDE: the Padaro Lane surf spot was the last place my brother and I surfed together before he left the earth. There were glassy, long lines, hanging 10, type of waves on certain swells, etc. Memories last forever. )

Our son used to love seeing this giant guy looking at all of the freeway traffic for many years. The Santa Claus Lane area attraction made the drivers and families stop for a break on the long drive between major cities on the coast. That big statue was a giant calling card. We stopped many times for snacks and a fabulous view of the ocean.

So, what happened to the Santa Claus statue? It is in Oxnard, CA, just down the highway a few more miles, south.

It looks like the right rear wheel may have broken off on the hub as it appears that the pressure plate and knockoff are still in place. The car isn't really damaged as much as you might think.

The first attached photo looks like Kelly Petillo at Legion Ascot. I'll bet he loved the Italian speed helmet.

And I never knew that Hal Robson ever drove the Don Lee Mercedes; even if it was only in Practice. A great photo that reveals some forgotten history, Rootie! Thanks for posting.

Ed McVay out of K.C. Mo. He was a top shoe in the central states and IIRC he won the NASCAR midget championship at one point also. I believe he may have went on to build cars after he quit driving.

I don't understand the reasoning behind the moderators. I just had that post deleted ,citing that it was "too new"
It was actually a response to posting # 149135 [and photo #6 ]
    https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum...m-days-gone-by.428585/page-4972#post-12354748
Yet that original photo still remains posted there.

My comments were that it looked like a "rare 4 door coupe, or an optical illusion"
People aren't than sensitive or easily offended here are they?
