I was told that the engine in front was stock and it was used for driving it around the pits, etc., and when he ran it was just the 2 in back running.

    Hello,

While taking photos of a cool, greenish, Mercury Comet Station Wagon in a Santa Barbara/ Goleta resort hotel, parking lot, I noticed that it had a spotlight on a fender mounted mirror. This was an unusual set up and follows the above question/information by TH and fbi9. Does it have a safety feature that does not allow it to turn on facing other cars coming your way?

I could not figure out how the remote control works on this mirror/spotlight without being too nosy when taking the photos. The spotlight/mirror is too far forward to have a long twisting stick like normal spotlights. A remote of some kind must be used or…it is a fixed spotlight only to be used on those long empty desert roads as an accessory “bright” light. Since it is not a factory stock item, it should be approved.

In California, any changes to a stock headlight system is not approved and is a mechanical fix ticket. My 1965 El Camino had one of the early super high beam clear lights installed in the place of the regular high beams. It worked like a charm out in the desert trails at night. It is totally black out there looking for the motorcycle race pit area in the Mojave Desert. These high beam clear lights lit up the road like daylight.

Our several trips below the Mexican Border for motorcycle races used these clear bulb high beam accessory lights in the stock outlets. The strange roads were lit up brighter than city streets. It made for dirt road turn off identification much easier.

The inside high beam bulbs on the 1965 El Camino had clear lenses and a bigger filament for super intensity.

But, later on in the OC, in a random roadside vehicle check, the CHP made me remove them on a fix-it ticket. Easy to do and to replace. Only installed them when a 5 mile continuous European Scrambles or 90 mile Hare and Hound race was put on out in the Mojave Desert weekend. Then off they came on Monday.

The CHP officer said that bumper mounted and roof mounted extra high beam lights are approved, as long as they are not used on any regular highway and the stock headlights and high beams are not altered. They also have to have their own on/off switch.

We did see this Mercury Comet wagon cruising down the main downtown street at night without the spot light turned on facing other traffic. The Mercury Comet Station Wagon looked very cool. The lowered stance made it look like a true cruiser. That State Street was/is a very popular place to cruise during the day and night in Santa Barbara. Dinner patrons on the sidewalk restaurants get a car show every night. But, sometimes an idiot in a Mustang or a big 4x4 truck just ruins it for everyone.

Aside: I remember seeing a similar 1965 Mercury Comet Station Wagon on the BAT Auction pages years ago. I saved the information for a later look and possible purchase of the wagon. It was located in So Cal. 1965 Mercury Comet Villager Station Wagon

“This 1965 Mercury Comet Villager station wagon is described as mostly restored with 92k miles on the odometer. It has the optional 289 V-8 with automatic and appears to be quite clean. With 1,592 built, these ’65 Villagers are among the rarer examples of the breed. Find this one here on eBay in Diamond Bar, California with bidding short of reserve and a $13.9k Buy-it-Now.”

The photo posted by Rootie Kazoootie of the Italian Victory Helmet being worn by the driver at Legion Ascot in the 1930's was the model for the Ascot Park Gardena logo in 1959.

My apologies if this is a repost, but for those that haven't seen it before -

I don't think so LB, yes it's named "Bad News" but Somerset NY is between Rochester and Niagara falls on lake Ontario. It's a 6hr 13min 374 mile drive.

In one of those early diesel demonstrations, Cummins finished the Indy 500 without a single pitstop for fuel. They weren't the fastest, but they successfully proved reliability and fuel economy.

Seeing the tires grooved for a dirt surface. Makes me wonder if this car might have competed at Beach Ridge Speedway in Maine, before it was paved.
