Huntington Beach 1952 from the Chris Epting collection
2nd street and Coast Highway south

    Hello,

That old 1952 image looked familiar. My dad used to take us to Newport Beach and rent a small boat for fishing in the bay, just off of Coast Highway during those years. We had to pass this place all of the time. The 1952 image was taken on July 4th, which is crazy in Huntington Beach back then and every year since. If you add in a major highway, the beach, the fireworks, and tons of people streaming from the inland cities to see the show, it is a little daunting.

The 2nd Google image was from October 2016. That highway through Huntington Beach is always crowded, any time of the year. The image is the last section of the old town. On the next block, the “new” Huntington Beach has risen, much to the dismay of the locals.

Giant malls, tourist shopping centers, corporate offices, high rise hotels pack the next several miles toward Newport Beach. This place is unbelievable that it is not the sleepy beach town with great waves like it was in the early 60’s.

The only good thing is that on the weekends, many hot rods can be seen taking in the cool ocean breezes and sights while making this cruise down the Coast Highway. And…the world famous “Donut Derelicts” weekly gathering is just inland, down the road in town.

There is also a Mystery Spot just north of Santa Cruz, CA, in the Santa Cruz mountains.

Any time I see one of these early homecoming parade shots I can't help but think of Animal House.

I'm guessing this photo was taken around 1970 or '71. At any rate Firestone was still in the game. Notice the aluminum Ansen sprint wheels on the car and that the front wheels use lug nuts instead of knockoffs. In that era no one was changing tires anyway at any track on the circuit as both Firestone and Goodyear made sure their tires would last for an entire race. Lou Senter (Ansen Automotive) had also built the lightweight aluminum front hubs for this car.
