And can anyone ID this location in L.A.? It's a still image from a 1957 episode of Perry Mason.

The Richard J Kinsella School was on 42 Charter Oak Ave . The building is still there but has been renamed the Ramon Betances School . The buildings on either side of the school are no longer there.

Great photo, Rootie! What's the story on the two cars?

    Thanks.

They've changed things a little now. From roughly were the traffic is stopped to the next right hand corner is now American Row. From there to Main Street is Central Row. On the other side of Main is Pearl Street. I'm not sure where it changes over to Farmington Ave. That one block section of Asylum St. from State/Market up to Main is now a pedestrian walkway; they have a handful of food trucks/carts there during lunch selling stuff.

To the immediate left of this picture is where the Phoenix "Boat Building" stands now.

Don't know the details of the cars but the drivers are Herman Schurch on the inside and Billy Winn on the outside at Ascot in the early 30s. I'm really not sure but I think Western was a Oil/Gas company on the west coast kinda like Gilmore. Schurch was killed at Ascot around this time but in a different car I believe.

Despite the fact that I really like fire engines and fire trucks (they are not the same), I have never considered this line of work...

A possible OT question for the circle track historian types.

Danny Smith won a feature in Ohio over the weekend which puts him in the position of having won at least one race per year for forty three consecutive years.

Does anyone know of another driver who can come close to this?

    Len Duncan, perhaps?

Two Western Gas Special race cars. Billy Winn is in car number 49 and Herman Schurch is in car number 88 at Legion Ascot, December 1930.

Both later met their ends while doing what they loved. Winn was killed in a non-points paying AAA Champ Car event held at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. Schurch was later killed later in practice for another race at Ascot.

There was another Western driver, Speed Hinckley who finished 3rd of 3 in a Western Gas special on 30th May 1929, at the ½ mile dirt oval at Banning, CA.
