Snow removal, Feb. 2, 1950. If the workers look cold, it's because Portland's all-time low temperature was set earlier that morning. Three degrees below zero.

This reminds me of when I was a kid, around this same time this pic was taken, the DPW guys would stand on the sand in the dumptruck box and throw sand on our city streets with coal shovels. 12572957_10205516523094137_7518602150794149946_n.jpg

The time set by the 35 is impressive, even by today's standards - Google Maps reckons it should take around 2h 19mins and the 35 did it in 1h 49 mins - must'a been driving like demons.
    Cheers Rodney - good pic

Back in the '70s we had one of our truck drivers delivering a load of boats do the same thing. Shop was in So Cal and he got back east somewhere where there's lots of low bridges. Took the first 3 feet off all the boats.
Sorry for the not car pic, I included it just for a visual. This was a competetors truck, not ours but we all hauled the same way.

Not exactly way back, and the mods can delete this if it doesn't fit, but I thought the story line was proper considering the Volkswagen "convertibles" and boats posts. Back in the 70s when I was a newspaper editor in southern Indiana, we had a flatbed hauling an off-road dump truck hit a bridge on I-65 and knock it a foot off the foundation. When the dust finally settled, it was determined that the highway had been repaved so many times that the warning sign listing the height of the bridge was way off. State ended up not being able to sue the trucker, but having to fix the bridge on their own and then pay for the damage to the dump truck.
