Rootie, I'm not 100% sure about anything here but I think Atkins drove the #83 Kuzma dirt car (San Leandro Pipe Line Spl.) at Phoenix in the Bobby Ball November race and it had the reworked radiator opening that looked like the HBT car in your photo. And it had the "A" on the bumper. That same year Dee Jones drove a #87 Kuzma dirt car (Lynch Spl.) in the Jimmy Bryan race at Phoenix and it still had the original large Kuzma grill as well as an "A" in the front bumper. The Jones car is the one that I always thought was ex-Ruttman winning car. I think these were two different cars registered with USAC for 1965 with two different car numbers.

Thanks indy, I was thinking the #83-#87 1965 car was the same car but changed ownership at some point but you might be right. I'll have to look and see if I can scare up some better pics/info.

Those old Auto Parts stores sure did smell good - And always something to look at other than hand cleaner and antifreeze out front

  8. And the guys behind the counter were usually knowledgeable and there was real stock on the shelves behind them.. And most stores had a machine shop out back that could at least turn drums plus often much more than that. I'll bet they lose a lot to shoplifters these days too.
