it is interesting to see the cars just driving the street.
Reminded me that way back in the day, some of the customs were modified late model cars.

Rootie, what's the story behind this shot? Sure looks like a younger A.J. Foyt, but this V-8 car was before his time...is this just a pose, or did he really drive it?

What a great picture...I think that this was an impromptu car show in Lakewood or Long Beach? Hard to imagine so many famous customs in one parking lot (Tommy Thornton's Stude, Jesse Lopez, Bob Hirohata, etc, etc...

Yeah, it's A.J. in the early 60s. Just a posed shot, probably a promo for the Indy museum I suspect.

Notice the fuel selector on the far right of the instrument panel. The two positions are marked as "4" and "2". The main fuel shutoff valve is on the far left and out of view under the cowling. "4" and "2" likely refer to the number of fingers the driver is to hold up when the crew shows him a signboard asking about fuel. If the driver holds up four fingers then he is still using the main tank. Once he goes to the reserve tank he would hold up two fingers and the crew should get ready for the next pit stop. That's how it was done back in the days before radio communication was available. It was common practice for drivers to run the car until it started to run out of fuel and then switch over to the reserve for a few more laps before pitting. This was often done on the very first pit stop during the 500 as it also gave the crew a chance to calculate exactly what their fuel mileage was when starting from a full tank.

This picture shows two of the four main types of non-stock cars in California in the 50's - On the left you have the Hot Rods, down the middle and to the right are the sleds or customs - Not there are the Racers, they were back in the garage wrenchin' and the Surf Wagons that were at the beach
If you look closely you can see all the gals with their wild dresses and tattoos or maybe not.

I believe that the original of this photo was a black and white and I have a copy that I got with a set of instruments I purchased from Classic instruments along with several other early CA hot rod shots. Back when that was shot was taken I doubt that colour was generally available. I did read somewhere that the shot shown here was "colourised" much later.
