That was also done at Watkins Glen for the Grand Prix.

Riverside Raceway had no garages to secure the cars. The cars were kept at local car dealerships etc. overnight and as said driven to the track as needed. Pete Lovely kept his Cooper Ferrari at Skip Fordyce's motorcycle dealership I believe, I saw it headed towards the 91 one afternoon. This was the 1960 U.S. G.P. Another thing you would not see today was after the race they opened up the gates to the track and allowed anyone who wished to drive around the track to the pits and get out and mingle with the drivers, crews, and cars. Riding with my Dad in a '49 F-1 through turn Nine and getting to meet one of my heroes, Phil Hill is a memory that will not fade.

I attended the LA Time Grand Prix there in '61, most guys trailered their cars to the dealerships nearby but the runner-up, Max Balchowski in "Old Yeller" drove the car off the track to the trophy presentation at the Mission Inn, then drove home to Burbank...those were the days!

John Surtees makes a pass between two Fords and a Chevy driving his F1 Lotus-Climax up University Avenue heading towards the raceway for the 1960 U.S. Grand Prix. Incidentally, he did not finish the race because of an accident.

Cool car. Anybody know the what racing number and color this one is? Is it an 18 model?

Yes, it's a Lotus 18. Surtees drove the last four Grands Prix of 1960 for Lotus so the car would have been painted British Racing Green with yellow wheels. For the Riverside race the car was #11. I believe that 1960 was the year that Surtees made the transition from motorcycles to cars.

I think this is my favor thread on this site.

I enjoy looking at the old cars and remembering how much fun it was to be growing up in such a wonderful era.

Thanks to everyone who keeps posting all the great photo's and thanks for keeping the memories alive.

  18. Epic thread.....that could very well be....not read in its full entirety. 3123 pages !!! ???? Wow. Yep, this one may survive me yet. I'll have to just get some dice, and mark off what rolls.

This was in Chicago. Here's that Chevrolet clock/billboard in the background, taken by my dad about a year later (1955-56):

This was enlarged from a small area of a slide; looks like it reads "The winning V8/See your Chevrolet dealer".

Yes, this is a Lotus type 18, fitted with a 2.5 litre Coventry Climax engine. It is one of the three 'works' cars entered, Nos 10, 11 and 12. All were in Lotus' version of British Racing Green (a sort of bottle green) with bright yellow wheels.
No 10, driven by Innes Ireland finished second.
No 12, driven by Jim Clark, finished a distant 16th, many laps behind after trouble and this one, No 11 was stone last after a collision on the third lap.
