Are yoy saying that you could not see the picture I posted here? I looked back and found it here. I did not post a link to the Studebaker Drivers Club Forum. Sorry for any confusion.

5th pic down (above) is that where the term "pits" comes from?

I've seen a photo or two like this before (possibly the same track) and wondered the same thing. Anyone recognize the track? I'm going to post this on the vintage racing thread, too. Gary

Update: YES, these were the "pits" that became the pits! Gary

  9. I sure don't have the answer but it seems to me that the facility may have been built for some other activity than auto racing though I haven't a clue as to what that might be. It might have been inspired by the venerable baseball dugout. It sure looks dangerous.

Info on the 1908 race in this video.

Part of the course was the Long island Motor Parkway. Pic was taken at Hempstead Plains Levittstown.

Trenches or pits were dug at the side of the road during the inter-city races, at the start of the 20th century , for fuel and tyres.

Still hunting for goodies to post, but in the meantime, my sister-in-law brought over some shots of her family's cars today:

Rapid Ronnie Runyan is an amazing person. The last time I saw him several years ago, he was running a trailer sales and fabrication shop in Raytown, MO. He'd built three Chevy V8 powered motorcycles before anyone else had done it. A very interesting guy to say the very least.
