  4. In places where the road bed was poor at best, the wood would float on the road bed and provide a surface that could be ridden or driven on .

We still have wood in spots on the some of the dirt roads by our cabin in northern Minnesota .

my dad was born in 1911 and grew up in western co, he told me about roads that had logs laid across the road so they could make it up hills in model T's but having to back up. This was around Leadville a mining town about 10,000 feet. Wish I had some pictures. He ran rajo heads and other things. He got me into cars, 72 and still enjoying the rush.

In 1854 the Fayetteville and Western Plank Road opened. It ran from Fayetteville, North Carolina to Behania, near what is now Winston-Salem. The 129 mile long plank road was then the longest such road in the world. By the time the Civil War came around the road was all but gone.

Reason Model T's had to back up on steep hills, was because gas tank was under drivers seat, & no fuel pump.
Resulting in backing up the grade, kept the motor running good.
