    I don't know one from the other but appearance aside, clearly they're designed for different applications. One is more versatile with couplers at both ends that the other (with the long swooping front) doesn't have.

    The NYC pictured above can be used for freight or passenger while the other is most likely passenger only.

    The coupler is hidden but it is still there, it swings in behind a cover plate when not in use.

    Thanks for clearing it up, MurphMan. My Dad worked on couplers for nearly four decades, and a coupler looks like a coupler to me. I never thought much about their use on engines, just regular rail cars of various types.;)

    If I were to speculate:rolleyes:, I'd think that anything as heavy as that engine would need a coupler at the front end, too, at least for moving it around in a yard or shop without having to fire it up. Heck, even battle tanks have a mechanism(s) so they can be moved -- or retrieved.

    I found this location in the 300 block of N. Central Ave in Parsons KS. It is on the SE corner of Central and Clark. It is the former site of Moss Motors, a Nash Dealer in Parsons that went out of buisness in 1956.
