My friend is on a 3 week motorcycle tour and stopped in Fairmount, Indiana at the James Dean gravesite. Shot this picture and sent it to me. Many of us will remember his time and passing.<TABLE border=0 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top>Birth: </TD><TD vAlign=top align=left>Feb. 8, 1931

It's no secret to most HAMBers that steam power was the rage that fascinated the human mind during much of the 1800s, paving the way among a willing public for newer technologies to be powered by electricity and fossil fuels. The attitude of excitement THEN virtually mirrored the much later exclamation of the exuberant Ray Stance character in the comedy, "Ghost Busters": "The possibilities are unlimitless!"

In hindsight anyway, it seems to me that real-life sometimes imitated art, in that inventive contraptions imagined in fiction -- especially pulp novels -- were followed by real-world counterparts, often flaunted at major exhibitions and fairs. As the above wonderful color dime pulp cover art shows, though, SOME breath-taking inventions were on the far-fetched side! :D LOL.

Issued in the 1880s, the periodical depicts the young fictional hero, Frank Read, who was the forerunner of an even more popular mythical character, Tom Swift. Heck, far-fetched or not, it was good, clean, stimulating fun back in an era when most folk still got where they were going ON FOOT! :( Boredom in those often-mundane days must have been oppressive, especially if you helped you parents work the farm! So it's very easy to imagine boys (and girls, too) trading such pulps around -- at least those who were lucky enough to have the purchase price, which many did not. (Doubtless, THIS type of literature would have been frowned on by teachers and librarians alike!!!
