    Census Bureau. The caption from National Archives says that these punch machines were used from 1890 to 1950. Wonder when this pic was taken?

    Radial engines normally have uneven
    numbers of cylinders - ie - usually 3,
    7, or 9 cylinders etc. per row - but
    not the Nordbergs. Instead of using
    a single 'master' connecting rod with
    the all the other 'slave' rods attached
    to it, as in most 'normal' radial engine
    designs, the Nordberg radials
    employed a unique 'double master
    rod' arrangement, with two 'master
    rods' on a single crank journal,
    instead of only one and allowing
    them and the have an even number
    of cylinders - usually, eight cylinders.
    Some other unique features about
    the Nordberg radials too - a lot of
    them had dual or even multi-fuel
    capability and could be set to run
    first, with or without spark ignition
    depending on the grade and type
    fuel being used - and then run on
    diesel fuel or various petroleum
    distillate fuels and/or on natural or
    various other flammable gasses too.
    In addition, while they were nominally
    4-stroke engines, some of them could
    also be run as 2-strokes and switched
    back and forth between 2 and 4-stroke
    operation while running!
