Tony Bettenhausen and his team are in the pits at Indianapolis in 1955, preparing for that year's 500. Possibly Carb Day. The names are already painted on the pit wall, and the Filter Queen people are vacuuming the front stretch. Tony finished 2nd that year in the Chapman Kurtis.
Jim Hurtubise climbs out of his front engine Mallard, after a very short 1968 Indianapolis 500. Of course, it was an accomplishment that he even made the race by then dominated by rear engine cars, and in a car that he designed and built. Though Herk tried mightily over the next eight years, 1968 was the only year he put the car in the show. Still his determination to do things "his way", made him a legend.
An excellent Ken Coles shot of Jud Larson in A.J. Watson's sprint car at Terre Haute, 1965. On the gas had, while looking up the track. That's the way the great one's race.
Gene Aurty and his wife, Ina Mae Spivey, with their '49 Cadillac 60 special in front of their Hollywood home.
Clark Gable with his '32 Packard Twin Six Convertible Coupe. Recent photo of the same car. Clark Gable only owned it until 1934.
Thanks for the info, Bleach, these luxury cars from the 20's and 30's are so georgeous. a modern 200 k luxury car parked beside it would just stink like fish in the sun. must have been interesting times back then.
With no room for the magneto on the front engine they had an interesting solution, we can’t see the drive, (most likely gears) but the mag is next to the Moon tank.
I got to see the Round Door Rolls in the Petersen basement before it was restored. I'll try to find a video of it, it had a rough life. Bob
