I think roll bars were required starting in 1957.

 

Gordon Johncock at speed in the 1965 Indianapolis 500 during his rookie year. Driving the Weinberger Homes, Offy powered Watson roadster, Gordy started 14th and finished 5th. It was the last successful run by a roadster in the Indianapolis 500.
